Something quite strange at Dublin Airport

Hi, I was out at the airport earlier on today and at about 15:00 I noticed a Cessna 172 on approach to 28 however at I'd say 100 or so feet it began to climb away and flew in the direction of Weston. It did not look like an ILS calibration aircraft or anything like that, just a normal Cessna. Can anyone shed any light on this. Thanks

Not that strange at all, probably a visual approach by a training flight. Happens often enough if the pattern allows.

It's rare a couple of times per year at most.

Honestly? I use to see them regular enough, having said that I generally wouldn't be paying that much attention while working.

A couple of years ago I flew from Weston (in a Robin) and was operating within the CTA in the Garristown area for a short time. When I told DUB Tower I was ready to go back to Weston the kind gentleman offered me a route over the VOR, continuing along the approach of R16 to overfly the runway at not above 200 ft, then over the M50 and then break right for Weston. It was the coolest thing ever! I even remember him telling an approaching Ryanair to disregard me if I popped up on their ACAS as I had clearance.

It was around 7 pm on a summmer weekday so I was surprised to be offered this routing. I sure wasn't complaining though!

Yeah, no one asks anymore to be honest, didn't help that the DAA ran them out of town and most don't feel welcome. ATC certainly could have facilitated them from 2009-2013 when it was quieter but now it's gotten busier there is less chance of getting an approach unless you want to orbit for an hour for a gap.

So as a result we only rarely see light aircraft training.

That's sad in a way. It's a pity that future pilot trainees won't be able to experience what FWVT did above.

Back when all commercial traffic was grounded during the Icelandic eruption I had a great flight. Filed a flight plan and my instructor and I took off from Weston, followed the M50 east and then over the coast of St. Anne's Park in Raheny. After flying along Bull Island, called up Dublin and asked for a touch and go on 28. Unfortunately they were using the downtime for much needed runway maintenance but gave me an approach to 16 at 200 feet as above. Had an amazing view of the entire fleet in Dublin. I doubt I'll get to overfly an A330 at 200 feet in a Cessation again anytime soon. After that, we flew the runway heading and turned off before the Pidgon House chimneys and then flew straight down the Liffey at 1500 feet, circling overhead the GPO before heading for Palmerstown and back to Weston.

Was by far the best flight I've ever done and the weather was perfect, not a single cloud and barely any wind. Doubt I'll get to do it again.

I did a full stop landing into Dublin in a Cessna 172 last year.
Out of Weston along the M50 and landed on runaway 28. It was very easy until we landed and had to figure out the maze of taxiways!

I spent longer taxiing on the ground at Dublin than in the air from Weston.

And, as it turned out, not much volcanic ash either.

What a few weeks. Very strange silence with nothing passing every so many minutes.

Also Eddie Goggins and AN Other put on a hell of a show over Howth just west of LAPMO, because they could:).
