    If anyone actually still has a laser card, this is probably something you should follow up with your bank;
The Laser Board has approved the removal of all Laser Cards from the Card Payments market as and from 28th February 2014. After this date, Laser Card Issuers will no longer accept payments to Laser cards and the brand will cease to exist on debit cards.

While the majority of cards have already been withdrawn from the market, a small number of cards remain in circulation during which time transactions will continue to be accepted by the Card Issuers. After 28th February 2014 however, Laser card sales will no longer be processed by the card issuers.

Please note Chargebacks are permitted under Laser rules for 180 days after the first presentment. Therefore, Chargebacks for Laser cards will continue to be processed for 180 days after 28th February 2014, i.e. until 27th August 2014.

Got the email from AIB Merchant Services.

AIB replaced the Laser card with a Visa Debit card. If you didn't get yours yet you should phone them up.

I tried to buy something on a Ryanair flight just before xmas using a Visa Debit only to be told they only accept Laser. What kind of topsy turvy backwards world did I enter there for a moment, I thought to myself.

    Absolutely agree.

Laser cards were a pox. They were a (very) poor man's debit card. Couldn't use them on most websites, etc. Visa debit all the way.

As an independent sovereign nation I think it was important that we had our very own debit card system.

As long as that lasted, the whole independent sovereign nation bit.

I had great craic overseas in restaurants or pubs or wherever asking people if I could use my Laser when it was time to pay.

Will Visa debit allow us to now use card for small purchases? Like how in some shops like centra there's a minimum spend?
I know it's because the stores don't wanna pay the royalty but still

No. I still fall foul of that with a debit card. One of my absolute pet hates. That and paying Governemnt Duty for the luxury of having a debit card.

So you want to use a card to pay for a packet of crisps?

I think you've answered your own question there. It's up to the shops themselves, not Visa as to whether there's a minimum spend.

Though they're really trying to push this contactless payments stuff, and for that they'll need to abolish the charge.

The twenty or thirty cent charge or whatever it is makes it unworkable.

I only got it because we use them to process payments. I'm not a personal customer of AIB's.

If i need to. Why not? But i'm more talking about if i have a sandwich or something under 5 euro and no change.
I recently came home from the USA and I could easily pay for items under 15 dollars by just tapping my card off a pad on the till. It's was extremely handy

I used it as a point of sale debit card in Bosnia, Prague, Austria, Holland, Germany and South Africa.

When people say 'overseas' they mean it was crap in the UK. There were 20% of merchants who had upgraded the terminals so it would
I remember when it would not work at Irish Ferries terminal in Holyhead, needless to say I was NOT a happy camper sailor.

I remember feeling like a boss when I got my first Laser Card, made me feel all grown up. Then I realised how sh1t it was

Much happier with my Visa Debit card now, although memorising my number is possibly the worst thing I've ever done. So many impulse buys :(

It's mad how slow many terminals in Ireland are though. Is that somehow a consequence of the Laser protocol or just down to the internet connection?

In the UK and other countries I've used card payment (Belgium springs particularly to mind) the terminals are usually very quick, much quicker than rooting for cash and getting change. Hopefully the process is improved rather than just the cards basically re-branded.
