Since the release of the Michael Collins coins we have had the coins below released.

    15 Euro Hound (Silver)
    10 Euro James Joyce (Silver)
    10 Euro JFK (Silver)
Double Set JFK (Silver and Gold)
    15 Euro Lockout (Silver)
20 Euro Rock of Cashel (Gold)

With the exception of the James Joyce coin, all are still available from the Central Bank.
The Joyce coin had an error in the text on the coin. This caused a great deal of excitement and the coins sold out in one day. They cost €46 but were selling online for more than 3 times that quite quickly. They are still selling for around €100 on eBay now.

The Irish Times of 4 January 2014 carried a report on an 111 year old Irish woman, resident in the United States, who received a letter and medal from President Michael D Higgins.

The report added that Áras an Uachtarain issues a letter and special commemorative coin from the President to every Irish person aged 101 and older.

There is more information on the Centenarian's bounty on the <citizensinformation dot ie> website, which states that the "the President [marks] the birthday of each person resident in Ireland over the age of 100 years. On his or her 101st and every subsequent birthday, the person receives a special commemorative coin in a presentation box, along with a congratulatory letter signed by the President. A new coin is designed for each year.

My curiosity is about what the President's "special commemorative coin" looks like?

It would seem to be something more than the Central Bank annual mint set! Also, there is no mention of a medal on the above website.

There's a paper in "Occasional Papers 45-51" of the Numismatic Society of Ireland which deals with the centenarian medals. The article was published in 2011 and covers the 2000 to 2011 issues, but I presume the medals continue to be minted. They were first issued in 2000 and the reverse design has changed each year. They've all been 40mm in diameter in fine silver; the weight has varied from year to year, between 20.0 and 25.2 grams.

The obverse each year is similar (2000-2007, one type, a second in 2008 & 2009 and a third in 2010 & 2011) - the Presidential Arms and the legend UACHTARÁIN NA HÉIREANN. The reverse of the 2000 medal reads "a Witness to 3 Centuries FINNÉ AR THRÍ CHÉAD ANNO MM DOMINI". The other medals mostly feature quotations from Irish writers.

I don't know if there's any online information on the medals - the first I'd heard of them was in the Occasional Papers paper.

There are pics in the article I mentioned - I'll take a photo' of some of them & post it this evening - the designs aren't super-exciting, but nice to live long enough to get one!

I should have that here too so, but my books and papers are all over the place so it would take me ages to find it. Please do post the article.

The other night in the pub a guy mentioned that his mother was 100 and something and received a letter from the President, there was other chit chat going on so I said I'd leave it till the next time I see him to ask did she also receive a medal and was there any chance of a photo of it as I remembered this thread.

Any publication stating how many of each medal that was issued to recipients. My own grandfather is 96yrs so I only have to wait 5 more years to see one.

The number of recipients each year is given in the article.

Many thanks:D to Akeady for uploading the scanned article on the Centenarian Medals.

I see from a Google search that, in 2012, the President's Office conducted a tender competition for the manufacture/supply of these medals and that the number of medals to be delivered was 530. The highest number of receipients between 2000 and 2011 was 296 (in 2011).

Although press articles on the Centenarian's Bounty use the term 'coin' and 'medal' interchangeably, there is little doubt on reading the scanned article that the presentation item is a medal!
