    Hi,

Won a weekend in Raheenwoods Hotel in Athenry, heading up at the end of the month for the weekend. Any recommendations on things to do during the day? Is there much nightlife there or are you better getting a taxi into Galway? Any decent restaurants or pubs?

    Thanks

Very good restaurants, Pubs are alright (there's loads of them), many will have live music. If you're staying the Friday night in the Raheen woods, they do a steak deal (ask for it in the bar) Steaks for two and a bottle of wine for E35! Great deal.

January is a bit quiet. I dont' think the castle is open and the heritage centre isn't open till the 3rd of feb alas.

Old Barracks do good food, Bridgie Glynns (says J.Glynns outside) on old Church Street is good for a nice pint.

If you want to head to Galway you could always get the nightlink bus. It goes to and from Athenry to Galway on Friday and Saturday nights and costs around 10 return last bus back is at 2:30am. Taxi from Galway to the Raheen woods would be around €30 euro.

Note: There isn't a footpath all the way from the hotel into the town. There is around 400 yards where there isn't any.

Drove past the castle and OPW flag was flying (in Jan!!) with plenty of visitors cars outside. So yes, Athenry Castle is open to visitors!!

Great weekend in Athenry. Spent a lot of time in Dan's Bar, great spot for sports fans, The Raheen Woods was great. Staff are so welcoming. Very well run. Had food one night there and it was immense, ate in the Indian as well as that was lovely. It was a great weekend over all, thanks for the help. Only thing is the lack of a footpath from the hotel to the edge of town. About 300 meters with no path and it is a busy road with pedestrians and traffic, looks to be room for a path too. Pity they don't have one.
