A/Rist in the spotlight (This week Blockic)

Our graduate mentor has kindly put his head on the block for this in an attempt to revive these threads (no such thing as a new idea, only rehashing old ones :) )

For anyone unfamiliar with these threads its basically a Q+A with a different speaker each week. At the end of the week the speaker nominates someone else (PM them and clear they are ok to do so)

Here is a link to the previous incarnations of this.

    So I'll start....

How did you get into running?
Highlight of running career to date?
When are we going to see the blockic/Claralara showdown?
    Goals for 2014?
What is the greatest treat your training allows you to indulge in (lets keep this PG so we will restrict this to food and drink :D)

What actually happened when you were taken aside en-route to Chicago? Did it involve latex gloves?

Did your win in the novice cross country whet your appetite for chasing success at shorter distance races or will you continue to be motivated mostly by faster times over longer distances?

Do you envisage running 3 or more marathons per year every year or was this youthful exuberance?

Are you really first cousins with Priscah Jeptoo?

Did you run as a youth? If not, did you think you would progress this much in such a short time?

You're a Corkman, right? But you represent Kilkenny when running, right? Do you feel like you've betrayed your home county? If you were participating in a race in Cork, would you wear a Kilkenny singlet? :)
    Favourite US marathon?
Would you ever consider doing a triathlon?

Thanks ecoli, for bringing 7 days of questions on me! I'll give it a bash, but might not be able to keep up by the looks of it! ha! :)

How did you get into running?

I worked part-time in a supermarket while in college and they were looking for someone to do the run section of Musgrave triathalon in Farran Woods in Cork, I felt I had a reasonable fitness base from GAA so said I'd give it a bash. It was 10km, fitness doesnt transfer, I ran and walk parts and finished in 54mins, it was painful, but the sense of competition brought me back.

Highlight of running career to date?

Good but tough question, Chicago obviously comes to mind but I know there is more there on that frint and it was only a stepping stone so instead I've opted for my first proper race win in the Kilkenny Novice XC. The feeling of crossing the line first, no buzz like it.

When are we going to see the blockic/Claralara showdown?

I'd love it! But I can't see our diaries clashing anytime soon which is a pity. Boston 2015 perhaps?

    Goals for 2014?

Once I get back on my feet and if all is going well the big one is the 2:50 marathon and then 1:17:59 HM, getting the 10km and 5km times down also as they are soft at the moment.

What is the greatest treat your training allows you to indulge in (lets keep this PG so we will restrict this to food and drink :D)

Not a big drinker but a big eater. Funny that regardless of if I was training or not I'd still indulge on the same food as I don't really put on weight (that will prob change soon!).

Can't beat a take away from KC's in Cork. Also a big fan of carrot cake/ mince pies!

    Favourite mince pies?

This lady in work makes homemade mince pies as Xmas, best I have ever tasted, anywhere.

Deep filled is a must, commercially I would probably do with Superquinn baker range.

Have you already drawn up your training plan and targets for the next year?

Not really, focus is to get back where I was for now, but as above if everything worked out, 2:50 would be the marathon target and get the shorter distances down as they are a bit soft at the moment.

    Sporting background?

Played GAA since I was a toddler as the family are big into it and there is history there, was handyish at Football and played keeper in Hurling following after the father, my goalkeeping days went downhill when I started becoming short sighted , started to miss the odd high ball, had given up at the age of 18 after I broke my collarbone and had no interest in going back due to college/ part time work.

Only realised after I gave up the GAA that it was my eyesight and not me that was at fault from missing those high balls!

(Apart from Claralara) who has a target on their back?

Good one, targets include Gavlor and a newcomer dublin runner at the moment due to similar abilities and long term (marathon wise) my eyes are set on RunForestRun.

    Favourite training session?

Have only done this the once but will be one for any lead up to 10km in the future. I loved it, I like sessions that have a variation of paces to mix it up a bit.

    3 x {4min 5KP (2 min) + 8min 10KP (2 min)}

    Least favourite session?

11 miles with 7HMP - Great but horrific.

    Favourite place to run?

I havn't had much variation in my running places really so my options are limited.

There is a 12 mile hilly loop down home in Cork that I done many of my LSRs on when marathon training, it touches the coast a couple of times and you can see far out the Atlantic and also pop past a couple of secluded coves, love it as I'm not down home much so brings back good memories running the quiet country roads by the coast.

I'll be back later on to get through some more, just need to go see Utd get pretty much knocked out of there only remaining silverware hope first! :D

    5) Are you addicted to your garmin or can you run without it?
    6) Chinese or chipper take away?
    7) Do you remember the world cup in 1994?
    8) Would you run another beer mile?

    2 questions:

Top 3 favourite Arsenal players of all time?

Also - know you follow American sports, which is your favourite and why?

Where does 'Blockic' come from and what does it mean?

When do you plan getting one of your weekly 'graduate' plans up on time? ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,821 ✭✭✭blockic

What actually happened when you were taken aside en-route to Chicago? Did it involve latex gloves?

Ha, this has been bugging you for months! :D It was all routine, no touching, just had to wait a little longer for a stamp due to previous visas!

Did your win in the novice cross country whet your appetite for chasing success at shorter distance races or will you continue to be motivated mostly by faster times over longer distances?

Kinda, but focus for the moment is still to get the marathon time down but there is no denying that I enjoyed the win and but see no reason why I can't work both for now.

Do you envisage running 3 or more marathons per year every year or was this youthful exuberance?

No, 1 raced marathon a year from now on, maybe one other at a jaunt...we'll see. The reason for running so many this year is that circumstances meant I might not be able to run Cork and Dublin anytime soon again so I took the opportunity now while I had it.

    Ok, yes, youthful exuberance! :D

Are you really first cousins with Priscah Jeptoo?

Based on my running form, she's my sister!

What's your favourite flavour of crisps?

    Salt and Vinegar

Did you run as a youth? If not, did you think you would progress this much in such a short time?

My first experience of running was the primary school sports day where the boys in the class raced about 100m. Top 3 would get to run in the city sports in The Pairc. About 10 ran, I never made it to the City Sports, always came 5th or 6th. Never ran as a kid outside of this one day a year thing and GAA. Conclusion: I was crap at running as a kid!

The the answer to the second part is no, of course not...progress has been way beyond expectation but that said, it means nothing if I don't keep it going.

Aside from me, who is your favourite boardsie?

Haha, gun to the head type stuff! drquirky is up there, he is crazy on here and provides great entertainment but a real nice guy in real life!

What is your ultimate running goal?

Have no idea, three months ago it was sub 3 marathon, but that moved faster than expected so free wheeling a bit at the moment and taking it as it comes. When you reach a big goal, its difficult to pick yourself back up and think of the next one...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,821 ✭✭✭blockic

You're a Corkman, right? But you represent Kilkenny when running, right? Do you feel like you've betrayed your home county? If you were participating in a race in Cork, would you wear a Kilkenny singlet? :)

Absolutely, it sickens me on a daily basis, but needs must. I opted not to join KCH when I was club hunting as I could not be seen wearing black and amber ;)...opted for the red and white of Gowran instead!

I have raced in Cokr since but have yet to wear the KK club singlet, might be shot,

    Favourite US marathon?

Have only run the one so difficult to compare. Chicago will be high up the end listing no doubt but really looking forward to Boston. I'll likely have a few more under my belt over the next few years.

Would you ever consider doing a triathlon?

The devil's sport? Nope, can't swim after multiple attempts/ lessons

What do you think your all-time marathon PB will be?

I'll take a stab at 2:44, once the PBs start changing from minutes to seconds, it will be time to move on and focus on the short stuff, couldnt give such a big commitment with little potential award. I don't know how you do it.

    Who is your running hero?

Have never really followed athletics I hate to admit, as cant be seen from my lack of discussion in any of the international athletes threads.

I remember Sonia winning the Silver in Sydney and the XC wins, so I'll say her for now.

How many days a year do you not run?

In 2013 it was, 132, my first full year running, without the injury in Dec it would be in around the 110 mark.

Hangover: Stay in bed or run to clear the head?

Pfft, is that legit? Bed all day long! :D

The day of DCM you were doing everything in your power to get the leg over on either diggers daughter or claralara's sister. Who were you trying to score?

What would you buy digger as a father in law present for Christmas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,821 ✭✭✭blockic

    1) McDonalds or Burger king?

Burger King, I have an absolute hatred for McDonalds no matter how many pints I have, I would go home empty rather than touch the stuff.

    2) Favourite/least favourite race distance?

    Favourite: Half Marathon

    Least favourite: 10km

    3) 2014 Option A: Cork to win hurling all Ireland, munster to win heino cup and Arsenal to win the double or Option B: Blockic runs 2.49 marathon PB?

    AH Jasis!! I'm torn....Option A...cause I'll run a 2:48! :D:p

    4) What shoes do you race/train in?

Mizuno Inspire 9s, love the shoe...just bought the Musha recently but have yet to take them out of the box.

    5) Are you addicted to your garmin or can you run without it?

I'm not addicted in a way, but I wear it all the time as I just want to keep a record of my run.

I'm going to compromise this year for 5kms and still wear it but turn it on Time of Day only and try this "run by feel" 5km that TRR swears by!

    6) Chinese or chipper take away?

Chipper, ever watch that chinese take away prime time documentary!

    7) Do you remember the world cup in 1994?

Wow! Nail on the head. My first foolball memory was sitting in my living room at home in 94 watching ireland walk out in Giants Stadium and Houghton scoring the screamer.

Also Jack losing the rag against Mexico down in Florida. I had the wall planner and all for that world cup, loved it! Might still have that actually..will try root it out at home.

    8) Would you run another beer mile?

Absolutely, but train harder this time. Event of the year.

    9) Is auldmanking your dad?

Haha, he's more of a life mentor as he's been through it all with his age.

Top 3 favourite Arsenal players of all time?

Very hard to pick 3 and I'd only be able to name from my time as a fan... but I'll try..Best and favourite are very different aswell....hmmmm

As good as Keown and Adams were, I was all about the goals and flashy attacking play the three names that come to mind are:

    Henry
    Bergkamp
    Overmars

Await response due to shock omissions!

Also - know you follow American sports, which is your favourite and why?

I first found my love of american sports by playing NHL 2000 on the Nintendo and have been hooked since. :D

Was and still a Red Wings fan with a soft spot for the Avalanche as I loved Forsberg.

Just loved the agressiveness of the Hockey as it was similar to hurling

However now, and to answer your question. American Football. Just love it. Yes it's crazy long and very stop start but it just keeps drawing me back. Give me another 10 years to learn the name of the plays though! :D

I'd be half a Lions fan so fairly raging due to the collapse this season and happy to see Schwartz go. That team is too good not to be in the playoffs.

Got well into the college FB while living over in the US a couple years back. Spartans fan as I've family who live 5 mins from the campus! (Hence all the Detroit teams!)

I'd watch baseball but it's a bit meh...and no interest in the Basketball

    Morning or evening runner?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,821 ✭✭✭blockic

Where does 'Blockic' come from and what does it mean?

The age old question that I always get asked! Back in my secondary school days we had the usual lunch time kick about, it was around Euro 2000 and Croatia were big at the time, I played centre half one lunch time and I was blocking every ball that came near me so the nickname blockic came to pass, a Croatian centre half! :pac: Around that time I was setting up my first email address so I used it. It’s been my internet name since..good news is it is never taken!

When do you plan getting one of your weekly 'graduate' plans up on time?

    This week I promise!

The day of DCM you were doing everything in your power to get the leg over on either diggers daughter or claralara's sister. Who were you trying to score?

Haha, only trying to be nice!…I took pity on them for having to put up with digger and CL :pac: Plus I wanted to talk to non-runners, we all know people who run are crazy! ;)

What would you buy digger as a father in law present for Christmas?

I’d buy him a bike so he could keep up with CL.

If you be any member of the arachnid family, which would you be and why?

Probably a black widow, he male species is harmless and not poisonous. While the female version is venomous and toxic! Take from that what you will! :pac:

Loving the double meaning in the question by the way, not sure if it was meant or not....It could be said that I am part of the arachnid family as is! ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,821 ✭✭✭blockic

When did you dye your hair from red to slightly less red?

Unfortunately I have had these red highlights in my hair since birth! Strange but true!

Plus I know you are only trying to wind me up ya langer!

Did you take up running due to being rubbish at golf?

Yes partly! But I always wanted to run a marathon anyway. Golf is pretty much completely gone now.

    Why Arsenal?

I’ve been an Arsenal Fan since 1995 due to their impressive style of play. ;) (How did Villa finish ahead of us that year!) Plus everyone else on the school bus followed bloody Utd and I’m not one to follow a crowd.

    Why kilkenny?

Purely work purposes, I’d hardly be here for any other reason. I see it as taking money out of this county and repatriating it back to Cork.

Where/when will your next marathon be?

It will be in September/ October (so you have a bit of time to catch up ;) ) Hard to tell at the moment where it will be as I don’t know where I will be myself. Going through work changes at the moment. Once that’s all sorted I’ll pick one.

    Ososlo or career move?

Both are unique and wonderful ladies.

    Can you cycle a bike?

I sure can, but feck off if you think I’m going to do any of this sportive lark. Pure excuse for going coffee and cake with a bunch of lads. Only difference is biking to the café rather than driving.

Well you can rule me out of your on-going investigation!

Do you know the trouble you'll be in if you ever try to score my Daughter again?

    Which one? :pac:;)

No expense spared, which race world wide?

Tokyo is what comes to mind for this one. Never been to Japan!

    Favourite Irish race?

Stook 10 ;). Of the one’s I have raced it’s hard to see past Dublin Marathon.

Feel a need to go back to Rotterdam at some stage?

Do you? :D …Nope, not at the moment anyway…I can’t face You’ll never walk alone for another while yet!

    Breakfast of choice when training?

Porridge with milk (water is manky), banana or blueberries, cinnamon, flaxseed. Coffee

    Any plans to go Ultra?

Nope, I think the marathon will be the longest distance I’ll run, although I can see running over distance would be beneficial for my marathon time.

6 months, everything catered for, train like a professional, how fast could you run 1 mile?

    I’ll take a stab at 4:50 – 4:55, but in reality I haven’t a clue!

Best piece of running advice to date?

    A few come to mind.

Run easy, don't bust a gut on every run
    Consistency is key
    Stay relaxed through discomfort
    Keep a positive mental attitude.
You might not win the race in the first mile, but you could certainly lose it.

What would you say to RVP if you bumped into him?

    &*(^ *&^% !$^* !%&*( !!!%^*% :D

Which Sky Sports Dolly Bird and why?

I have been short on SSN time lately, But from times past, Georgie Thompson can’t be surpassed.

Why? I think she read the sport good! ;)

Who do Arsenal need to buy now that Walcott is crocked and this could continue to keep ticking?

Hazard would be a nice addition! Once we get Ozil and Ramsey back it will be a big help!

Breakfast of choice when not training?

Fry-up no holding back or Pancakes and Maple Syrup.

    Go to comfort food?

These questions are tough! I’m big into homemade soup these days.

Veg or Mushroom with a bit of freshly baked bread..delish.

Snackwise…Ammm….these days..let’s say Aldi’s finest white choc cookies…these are tasty!

€100 to spare how would you spend it?

Meal for 2, I’d have to work on the plus one though! Ha!

If you were offered €250k to give up running, would you take it?

Offer me 1 million and we'll talk! ;)

Great question, and my instant reaction was surprisingly Yes...could pick up another sport!

Do you see yourself still runninwhen you are a M40?

Diet - do you think about it, follow any particular plan, put any importance on changing it?

I do think about diet but not strict about it, I just try to eat simple unprocessed foods where possible, avoid crap fast foods and limit poor snacking.

During peak training I just make sure I'm getting enough protein and not over carbing. The Basics.

    What are your weaknesses?

    Stubborn mo fo
    Crap running form
Lack of focus and commitment to flexibility and strengthening ( this needs to change)

    Morning or evening runner?

100% evening runner, can't get up in the mornings not matter how many times I have tried!

Such a diplomatic answer - ever think of a career in politics ? ;)

Ha, I've been well trained due to plenty of exposure on committees over the years...give an answer without givng an answer!!

    What's your current/previous golf handicap?

15.9.....that point 9 is very important! It was going up, reckon I couldnt manage 20 now while the brother has overtaken me, I knew then it was time to pack it in!

    Where were you a member?

    Callan Golf Club in Kilkenny

Least favourite type of training run (not necessarily session)?

    Hill Sprints

    What age are you really?

I get a raw deal on here, I'm 27 so pushing well on at this stage!

Best piece of running advice received and from who?

Answered already above I think, not sure where I got the advice from but the most of it was in the Mentored Novice Thread for DCM.

    Biggest langer on boards? ;)

    TRR ;)

On a scale of 1-10 how happy we're you that I missed sub 3 by a few seconds?

I'll be honest, I genuinely wanted you to get the sub 3 and I was gutted when you missed it...However I didn't want you getting 2:58:06 :D so I'll say....3

Had to pick is the important part there! I would probably pick tunguska. The reason? He's bloody much faster than me and seems to know what he is talking about so i'd give it a whirl!

Plus I can just get TRRs plans forwarded to me so wouldnt bother picking him! ;)

Which boardsie would you most like to beat in a dramatic sprint finish?

TRR, and then listen to his excuses and moaning with sheer delight! I would never let it down for years after!

Do you see yourself still runninwhen you are a M40?

    No
