What are the advantages/disadvantages of Hybrid bikes over mountain bikes? New years resolution to join the boyf on trail rides, but would also use for commuting. Varying opinions from cycling mates and have read that for trails you are better off going for hard tail mountain bike with lock out front suspension for road riding, but have seen some Hybrids offering same (e.g.trek neko s ) , tho other sites saying hybrids are terrible for trail riding and better off going for mountain bike!! V confused - any help much appreciated...

IMHO I'd say that a mountain bike would commute better than a hybrid would trail.

cheers for that spoke2cun. Can you recommend any good mountain bike models under Giant/trek or specialised?

A hybrid is a compromise. I use one for my commute and used a hardtail mountain bike previously. I seemed to run out of gears on the hardtail all too often. The hybrid I have has skinny 700cx23 tyres so rolls better on the roads it suits as all the commute is on the road anyway.
Its a flat bar but if I was doing any distance a drop bar / proper road bike would give a better riding position / be a better option.

A hybrid is fine for fire/dirt roads but for 'technical' rocky trails not so much. If you're just touring the fire roads though, the hybrid with chunky tyres will do fine.
