Offered a Fiat 127

I was offered a 127 today for €200 and was thinking of it as a project car.

Body is in fair condition except for 2 doors. I have had a look for spares and they seem hard to come by. Maybe the doors can be welded.

Car is running but definitely needs work.

Should I pass, is it likely to be more hassle than the end result is worth.

My first car was a white 1977 Fiat 127. They were actually quite a tough little car. Head gasket was prone to going but an easy enough job. The gearbox linkage ball joint used to pop off now and then. I had a timing chain go in one but it didn't damage the engine. Rust was the biggest problem, the top of the wings was the softest spot. If the right one came along I would be very tempted to invest.

at 200 lids its a sound investment, worst case scenario and the vehicle is utter scrap you can flog it to some hot rod racer pining for a bit of nostalgia.

    is it a series 1 or 2?

I had a lovely 127GT racecar a few years ago. Raced it in Historics once or twice. When the fibreglass Imp rebuild started I decided to sell it. Got a call from a guy who wanted to smash the windows, weld the doors and go grasstrack racing with it. I politely declined his offer and said I would like it to stay as was.
Few weeks later another guy rang me, came to see it and said he was going to do the odd trackday and Historic race. He made me a offer, I accepted and (you can probably see what is coming) a few weeks later the first guy was out grasstracking in it. Won a few races and then rolled it apparently.
    I was livid......
But in answer to the original post, if the car is not rotten, grab it. 127s were hugely popular in Ireland and they are becoming increasingly rare these days......
