You are two single persons this year but a calculation is done at the end of the year to take account of the number of months you were married and then allocate those credits to you.

So, you will get the benefit of your wifes credits at the end of the year when that rebalancing calculation is carried out and then you elect for joint assessment each year thereafter.

    Congratulations on your numptuals btw

EDIT- I see you got married in 2012 and informed revenue- In that case ring them and ensure you are on joint assessment for 2013 and 2014 and that a marriage adjustment was carried out in 2012

I believe that at the end of the tax year Revenue will do a calculation on your tax both on the individual and joint assesmnet basis and they will go with whichever works out best for you...if it ends up being jointly assesed they will remit any balance due back to you.

I would guess that a quick phone call to your local tax office will sort it out very quickly, they tend to be very good.

Im in a similar situation. We got married 2 weeks ago. My wife is unemployed and has been receiving job seekers (as a single person). I have been told that due to my gross wage she may lose this payment. My question is, will she lose this payment this year or next year when we are assessed as a married couple?
I know that i will be able to use her PAYE tax credit when we are assessed together and thats fine but if they take her payment away now and i continue to be assessed as a single person we would simply be screwed. I also lost the single parent tax credit this month so in theory if my wife loses her payment we could be down €1000 a month this year! Im hoping and praying thats not the case? Any advice?

Something to think about RE the above post.

if you claim your wife's tax credits, her job seekers allowance/benefit will count as an extra income for yourself and you will be liable to pay income tax on it.

i got stung after requesting a p21 balancing statement. My wife was only on JSB for about 7 months, but i had to pay retrospective tax on the extra income the following year.:(

must have been JS Benefit -- Jobseeker's Allowance is not taxable

Is benefit the one you get after you've 'paid your stamps'?

    yeah

Assume your wife still claimed her PAYE Tax Credit?

Dunno, I must check it. It was a couple of years ago though. When I get my p60 from last year, I'll get on to the revenue and ask some questions. Although from experience sometimes it's better not to ask too many questions.

I actually dont mind paying the tax on it next year if it means she can continue to claim this year to be honest

    Hi,
I am also in the scenario for first year of marriage as I got married in June and I am working here from July (my wife from August).

Do you know what is the procedure for claiming the tax refund at the end of the year(in my case starting with 1 Jan 2016).
Just need to give them a call in January, or will they automatically do the recalculation and set us on Joint Assessment?

You have to inform Revenue of you change in martial status. You need to complete a form IT2 and submit to Revenue requesting joint assessment for 2016 and subsequent years. You can do that now so it's in place for 2016.

Wait until you both have your P60's for 2015 to look for a year of Marriage Review from Revenue. Should have them by mid February 2016.
