You sound like a responsible owner who wants the best for their pets and wants to give them the best quality of life, there's nothing wrong with that! Would it not be possible for you to have someone walk him during the day, or to put him in doggy daycare if you work long hours? Or can you have hobbies where you can take your dog with you - a running club for example? If your personal circumstances do not allow you to care for your dog, it is indeed a responsible thing to rehome him. Maybe it's not a good time for you to have a pet that ties you to the house so much; it's usually a good idea a little later in life, when you're more housebound due to kids, chores etc anyway! If you're not pressed for time in your current situation you can find him a good home where he'll be happy and socialised.

OP, it's not a ridiculous problem. You can post in animals&pet issues for advice if you like - it might be better for advice. I'm pretty sure we've all been there.
