A: Keep prize money to top 6 riders only with the most going to the winner
B: Spread the money out more evenly, say amongst the top 15 across the line, but as a result, much less money for the winner
C: No prize money (maybe just something small for the winner), just an entry fee of 10 euro so the hosting clubs are enticed to hold more races and don't have to worry about the financial side of things.

another option would be spreading prize money between, not the top 15, but category winners

Personally the last thing I'm doing this for is the money (not sure if I've even cashed any cheques I've "won"). I'm happy if others want to fight it out, but keep it for the top few places (which won't include me anyway!) - that way you avoid the potentially hairy situation of riders sprinting in large groups just to make up places to win a few quid for 15th place

There are not supposed to be cash prizes for A4s anyway and I'm more than happy with that. I can understand though that for some of the guys who take it very seriously in the higher cats something towards their overheads would probably not go amiss

    Agree with this.

Money for top 6 in A1/A2. Something for top 3 in A3. Something for Winner only in A4.

Cash for the top three and a "better luck next time" for the others.

The last thing we need is the "everyone's a winner" virus seeping into the sport.

I got a prize for 6th place in A4. I simultaneously felt like a winner and a loser.

Prizes for A1's down to 6-10 IMO but top 3 for A2 or A3 and tokens for A4's.
If you're doing this for money then good luck to you...........

You could make it interesting by having the last six across the line financing the prize fund for the first six.:p

Yep spot fines for the first to be dropped and double fines for mechanicals...

Also anyone over 75kgs on deep section carbon wheels to pay a €100 entry fee.

That's ridiculous - this can only be policed on a BMI basis, with extra allowance for those of us with "heavy muscles" ...

    Top 3 in all cats.

The total prize money fund should only be 25% (or less) of the sign-on fees taken in. The only exception should be where a sponsor provides either cash or product for the winner.

Clubs should make a profit on organising local races, or at the very least not make a loss.

UCI level races with prescribed prize funds are a whole different kettle of fish obviously.

Those with power metre's should pay a further levy,

Maybe call it Stamp (ing on the pedals) duty

There's a difference between "doing it for the money" and wanting a few quid for going well. The cash may not entice someone to a certain race but if you do happen to have a good day, it's nice to have your entry fee covered and maybe even a few quid extra.
The one placing I got was well down in an A4 race where I got double my entry fee as a prize - it was very welcome as it more than covered my expenses for the day, thus relieving some of the "family" guilt.

Also, in terms of the cost of running a race, AFAIK a few €20 notes is not the biggest factor.

I think reasonable prizes if you podium and smaller cash prizes for 4th 5th and 6th. Why should A4 be any different, maybe smaller cash prizes given that it's somewhat a beginner cat.

    Slo

    Edit:
The €20 notes point is relative and differs for all race organisers - it could be very big if the main prizes are big.

I could win an A4 race. I doubt I could finish any A1/A2 race. Well I could finish but the prize giving ceremonies would be over and all the sandwiches would be eaten. The club house would probably be locked too.

prize money for each category based on the total amount of money received in that category. In other words lower cats not subsidising the higher ones...

Had meant to add a few comments on the original poll. The first was a very valid point that Ryan_Sherlock made before about racing in Belgium. Out there cash prizes go 40 riders deep apparently but only cover the cost of entry roughly (winner gets a flower wreath usually). Personally, I like this idea. I spent a fair few quid on my CI license, club license, entry fees and petrol money throughout the year (bought and built Chinese framed bike, built my own wheels to save on the bike expenses and the Mrs made the energy bars at home and by God were they nice). It would be nice to know that I might be able to defer the costs a little. However, I would deem that the organiser is at least profitable to some degree, first. If the prize money is kept constant, say €10 for each person in top 20 (maybe a little more for the winner) then I don't see sprint finishes being any different from the way they already are. Every sprint finish I was in last year, especially on flat circuits and in the A3 bunch (especially around leaving cert time when juniors were doing exams) were very competitive and "hairy" so I don't buy the argument that going deeper with prizes will change this.

I think A4 racers should get prize money as well. I don't see a difference. We're all riding our bikes, just at different levels.

A few years ago while in good shape (as an S3) I rode the Tour of Armagh, covered the first 10 miles in somewhere around 19 minutes then went up a drag and got shelled along with many more. Met up with 5 others and we rode like demons averaging just shy of 25mph for the 80 miles.
Got to the finish, prize giving over, sandwiches long gone and the last few volunteers getting into their cars.
In S3/V/J races that year I placed a good few times.
Kind of put things in perspective for me.............
