Hiit and Convict Conditioning

I have always wanted to be able to do full pushups and full pullups, and Ive just come across Convict Conditioning, so my New Years Resolution this year (I usually make one NYR and stick to it pretty good :P ) is to finally be able to do both.

I'll be doing the beginner plan which is just two workouts per week. If anyone else is doing this, what do you do the other days? I was planning to do maybe 3 Hiit workouts per week? Is that too much. I am not new to Hiit workouts, but the Convict Conditioning book warns about doing too much and not recovering properly etc etc.

But two workouts per week is less than I'd be doing right now, so I think my overall fitness would drop if I do that? I also don't want to start gaining weight, as it does not seem like the Convict Conditioning plan will help with that side of things.
    Appreciate any advice. Thanks
