Reality check

Hey motors heads. I need a bit of a reality check on the pricing for my car (sig).

It's taxed for 10 months, spent €250 on two tyres in November, the rest is in the ad. Of the private sales on Donedeal there are only 8 2008 Vectras. Mine is the most expensive, but was (not that I paid it) €11k more expensive than the base model new.

I've been offered €2,250 less than what I'm asking by someone who hasn't even bothered to look. I've been offered more by a work colleague, and my parents, but both need to sell cars first. I have had other calls for viewings without discussing price, but the flu has me unable to do those at the moment.

In all reality, I have every intention of haggling with someone, but am I completely out of whack in thinking €5,500 is taking the piss?? I got €3,250 for my 04 Mondeo Ghia when I traded it to a main dealer against this in July 2012, surely this is more desirable?

Hang on, €11,000 more than a base model? Who told you that?

It was a €35k model new, apparently. It was a dealer who had a similar one that I looked at, not the dealer I bought from.

It's 4 spec levels and 4 engine options up from base.

On a bit of digging it seems the offer is either from a serial offer merchant or a wheeler dealer looking to make a quick buck.

how much more would you have to pay to get leather in that car? 20k more than base level?

To be honest, with the high mileage and everything else, I would imagine it needs to be advertised at approx 4750 to generate some interest.

No surprises there given it's adverts.ie, wait until you will be asked to swap it for someone else's junk.

BTW, looking at your advert, it says 148k miles but looking at the speedo it is in km, is it 148k km or 148k miles?

The reality is though that Vectras were never loved, they need to be cheap to sell.

Good spot, could make all the difference.

16k miles or 27k kms a year?? For a large diesel repmobile? Seriously??

Leather only became standard at Elite spec, which you had to get a V6 for 2.8 petrol or 3.0 diesel. I did a LOT of research before buying this car. I also looked for one with leather as I had full leather in the old one.

I changed that yesterday but obviously didn't save it, thanks. Reckon I'm gonna end up just maintaining the payments and giving it to the mother if it comes to a point where I don't need a car.

It really depends how much of a hurry you are to sell it. At that age the price difference in spec becomes smaller. In fact at that age the higher spec might make it easier to sell over a base model but not that much more valuable.

Here is a SRi model for €6k, yes I know it's a Vauxhall but again at that age people are not going to pay huge money for a different badge. I'd say a SRi is probably more desirable than a Design too.

Personal loan or finance on the car?

To prove your point, there's already a deposit taken on the car, even with front and rear bumpers painted to a slightly different shade to the rest of the car ;)

Personal Finance. If I don't get enough to clear it then there's really no benefit to selling.

For some reason plastic shows a different colour than metal in some pictures. Look at the OPs ad for example. I'd never judge paintwork from pictures.

Maybe put the actual advertised price closer to what you "expect to get for it"

For instance if you put it up at 6500 you might get a little under 6, you are limiting your market by reaching too high

Spec levels for the Vectra 2008 were AFAIR

    Life ( base model )
Exclusiv ( base + reading lights/map lights slight trim alterations )
SRi Sports version ( Exclusive + 17" alloys, sportier susp.sports instruments sports seats etc. )
    Design ( Exclusiv + rain sensitive wipers/auto air conditioning/auto lighting/ERW 6 disc autochanger/ trim

Alll versions were availiable with the 1.9 CDTi 150PS Diesel and there were only 3 options on the base level the 4th option for the Design would have been the 2.2i liter 16v Direct

    Life > Club > SRi > Design

    1.6 Ecotec
    1.8 Ecotec
    1.9 CDTI 120
    1.9 CDTI 150

Elite spec was available with 3.0 CDTI V6 and OPC with 2.8i V6

I think the 2.2 was only available in the Signum in Ireland.

People will buy anything if theres enough discount to make it cheap or bump up a trade in price.
