I had my first sale of shares today and made a profit.
I'll probably remember this for years to come. I've text everyone I know. I was extremely happy clicking the sell button. Far too nervous I was going to type in the wrong amount!

I'd love to share it and hear about everyone else's first trade! :) Did she leave a twinke in your eye? Did she leave you penniless?

I started investing about 7 weeks ago after realising a job will never create much wealth. Picked 5 stocks and took a gamble. I mean gamble as I barely know what I was doing.

However I liked CGNR (Conroy gold and natural resources) and put a pittance on it.
Today due to some rumours, a BBC article and that they are sitting on 600k oz, It rose 38%. Crazy rise. It was out of line with every other gold mining company so I wasn't too confident on it being staying price. So I sold.

I'm delighted. I've been watching it every day for 7 weeks and it finally went the right way! So I bought at 2.12 gbx about 7 weeks ago and sold today at 3.01 gbx.
I have about 100 screen shots of it :)

It's very exciting! :) Terrified it will triple in price tomorrow :)

What was your first trade if you can remember? Was it a winner? Did you cut your losses and learn a lesson? Did you have any idea what you were doing at the time?

Excellent well done, can you recommend any company in Ireland I could use to set up an account with to buy shares?

Excellent well done, can you recommend any company in Ireland I could use to set up an account with to buy shares?

    Thank you!

I've only used my own DavySelect.ie account so I can brief you on that, but how it compares to others, I don't know.

    Pros:
    Easy to use.
    Nice simple explainations of things.
Very easy to read documents and the timing of trades is grand. Not instant though. More like minutes.
A few warnings which pop up if you do something that is obviously a mistake (like selling 10% below current price).

    Cons:
Overall Portfolio valuations only seem to be updated once a day. This annoys me.
Terrible graphs/drilldowns (so I use google/yahoo finance graphs). This doesnt bother me as they provide better tools than anyone i believe.

The prices are ok for me. They are definitely for investing and not day trading.
Irish shares: 1% stamp duty + 15.99 fee.
Us shares: 15.99 fee + 25 overseas charge.
London shares: 14.99 commission + 10euro stamp duty charge.

I expect to pay about 4% on average for a 1,000euro purchase. Which puts me at -4% starting off. Bigger trades would make this less of an impact obviously. My meagre pittance may one day grow to aid this! :)

    Hope this helps.

Well done on your first sell, manonboard. I have a few bob in CGNR too but I hope to hang on for the long term. I was tempted to sell today as they won't be profitable for a few years but what I decided to do was put in a sell order with a 'limit'. If Conroy had reached 3.3p today I would have sold enough shares to recoup my original stake. I've done this with several stocks before and it's a great feeling knowing that every penny in your broker account is profit! Anyway, it's worth thinking about for the future.

Btw, you are quite correct to call share dealing 'gambling' - that's all it is. For decades plebs like me thought only men in suits with financial degrees up the wazoo were capable of dealing. I was wrong - anyone can do it. Anyone can gamble but the trick is to research the company you're thinking of investing in (still no guarantee of success). For example, when you get a chance do a google search for 'conroy gold share discussion (or chat)' ( if you haven't already). You'll be surprised at the amount of info available .

    Well done again.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know the LSE had a section for discussion share price on every stock. It really gave some clues as to what was happening.
eg: nothing at all. Rumours and a good interview. It's back to it's near original price now so I may buy in again if it drops to 2p or 1.90.

I had another piece of luck today. I had some BOI shares at 25 cents. Major late to the party but i was able to sell at 28.8 today.
I know it may rise in the future some more but I was happy with my 11%+ gains in about a week.
That would of taken me about 3+ years of compounding interest rates before.

mighty tempted to look into INM, I tried to place a limit order but the davyselect.ie site tells me i have to ring up on the phone as the stock is listed on multiple exchanges and they only allow online access to the irish main market for that stock. I'd prefer to do it online so I can cancel orders etc myself if the share fluctuates too much or if i change my mind.

I get a Stock option at work for our company stock with a Employee 15% discount Every 6 months . I sold all my Shares in this.(We can invest anything from 1%-20% from our pay check into our company stock.)

Brought Tesla Motors Inc at $140.50 on Tuesday and its now $170.01
Also Brought Thompson Creek Metals at $2.61 on Wednesday now at $2.95

My first time investing and although only at a low number of shares, I am very happy with myself.
