I think this is a repeat of the series shown last year but well worth catching if you missed it.

Lovely nostalgic clips in this program.

Remember buying McGee tweeds for my late Dad..

Just for those who may think it's a dying craft!

Sad sight going back to the house and the weavers long gone, the house is like a museum.

I'm happy to say I've lived and enjoyed, and had the craic with lovely men as portrayed in this program.

The plate of spuds was a part of the daily diet.

    No overweight men there.

Is this a rerun of the original series? The only one I saw was the boat builder in Athlone - it was fascinating and I'd love to see it again.

Sorry to have missed the weaving one, hope it'll be on the player.....

No just a look back on them from the modern day to see what's left, will apparently be looking at 6 of the previous shows.

The original series (37 episodes) are available directly from David Shaw Smyth

Who/what is he??? Editor or producer of the original I'm guessing? Do you have a link or address? Something I'd be very interested in getting.

ETA - duh, just reread the OP, sorry!

Holy moly - €25 per episode

Might be making an emergency application to rejoin my local library!

Will definitely set a series link for the rest of the current shows.

Thanks for the heads up, OP.

    .

They are only €4 an episode if you buy them all together.

I would imagine that your Library should have them. (Naas has them)

You can buy the following 5 episodes for €20 from RTE

The 'Hands' five film compilation set number 1.
This is a selection of five films from the popular RTÉ documentary series 'Hands' on 2 DVDs.
    Featuring the films:

    • A Dublin Silversmith 1980 (26 minutes)
    • Belleek Potteries 1987 (60 minutes)
    • Donegal Weavers 1980 (26 minutes)
    • Curraghs 1978 (26 minutes)
    • Hurl Making 1983 (26 minutes)

Tonights episode "David Shaw-Smith revisits Powers Foundry in Wexford, where traditional sand casters have adapted their ancient craft to the demands of architectural metal restoration".

It's a pity the Foundry isn't in a lot more towns today.

    An amazing craft.

Footage, as usual, lovely to see.

Was suprised they didn't go all safety and wear gear you would find at a steel plant. They need to modernise and get themselves a website to promote their unique work.

    I agree.

Old dogs, new tricks and all that...

    Unique is the work AD!....:)

The Johnson family and their family of Tailors....

I love this series and the old footage.

    Real craftsmen.

Nice to see skilled family businesses like that still going in places like Tullow ... hopefully they can keep going for a few more generations.

Oh my gosh he was hilarious!

The vain head on him with his little belly and his initials on his waist :)

Michael Johnson is on Liveline now. President Higgins was watching him on Hands and got in touch. President Higgins made several visits to Tullow and he was decked out in one of Michael Johnson's finest suits for his visit to Windsor Castle today

Nice to see someone getting a well deserved boost from the programme

I heard him in Liveline in the car yesterday Skid, I didn't get the start so didn't realise this was the same family I watched on the program....Thanks for that!

Great bit of publicity for him and good for the President for giving him the job!.

    :)

This series seems to be starting again (again) on RTE.

I could watch it over and over and over again (again)!

Dublin City Libraries have the whole series on DVD if you want to see the rest of them, probably other libraries have them too.

Saw it this evening, it was great....

If I was exhausted at the foundry one, I'm mind-boggled at the saddlery one.

    That's one complicated process!

They're not going to show my SOD boat-buiding one, I fear
