Loire Valley - Any advice?

We're a group of ten (6 adults, 4 kids ageing from 2 - 6) heading to the Loire Valley in August. Looking for suggestions of where in the Loire might be best.

Does anyone have experience on where might be nicest? Near Tours? Sancerre?

I have never been to the region and we're looking for somewhere rural, with access to cycle ways/paths, and day trips to chateaux.

We're also looking for a big house to stay in if anyone has one!

    Thanks.

I'd suggest somewhere between Saumur and Amboise. That's a broadening of your near Tours idea. Not Tours itself, as it's too much of a big(gish) city with traffic problems and general hassle.

Saumur is my favourite location in the area but we have seen most of the major chateaux; first-timers might get more chateaux for their buck closer to Amboise. Young children probably won't have the same appetite for them as the adults. There is a zoo at Doue-la-Fontaine, but I have not visited, so can't tell you how good it is.

Cycling is a popular holiday option in that area, and you don't have to tackle too many hills. I'm too lazy to have personal experience to share with you.

You might also consider visiting one or two (or more) wine producers.
