Eircom's three strike rule

Does Eircom's three strike rule only apply to music downloading or any kind of downloading (ie movie, books, et .)

Or does it monitor the websites that facilitate the downloading of info such as kickass torrents, isohunt, etc?

Is it strongly enforced or are just ppl randomly picked out every now and again?

Course, there's only torrents, no other way to download......;)

people in Iran who can't access a blocked site sometimes can do a google search for the blocked site and include the word Proxie after eg "facebook.com proxie and can usually get to the site

That wouldn't help in the eircom situation because it's the actual torrents/downloads that ate being tracked not the websites.

They are not blocking torrents, only the web page so a proxy is perfect to access the page

I'm not talking about the pages blocked by eircom. I'm talking about the three strikes agreement mentioned in the title made between eircom and record companies to disconnect users who have been caught torrenting music. Afaik an outside company tracks the torrents and reports the users to eircom.

That is only for music. There are other ways to download that don't leave your public up visible for the world to see

I cannot figure why nobody has stood back and informed them that there is no possible way to write legislation faster than code. They cannot stay ahead of it, and any effort to prosecute or track will be as wildly inefficient as the "war on drugs".

What a waste of everyone's time.

Record label's are on the way out, unless they change with the times.

I did specify music. I am aware that there are other ways but it can't hurt to explain the situation for current torrenters who may not.

There isn't any issue with accessing the blocked sites...the torrents that are accessed from these sites is what the problem is about.

I've read a lot on this forum about the music companies being the main ones behind this...is it just torrents containing music that will be flagged back to Eircom?

You can change your ip address. Apparently Kerry is in Russia now :) I got a friend to do that for me cos vodafone blocked my download sites too and he said its a simple enough thing to do

AFAIK its the RIAA that are paying for it here, so its all music.

Careful with that. A free VPN through russia isnt the most secure idea ever.

The war on drugs has been going on in earnest for 50 or 60 years in some countries. If the futility of that hasn't been recognised by now then I don't know what hope there is for the war on digital copyright infringement

why not just build a dreambox using xbmc with icefilms & 4kmovies and any of the many music addons? i can watch pretty much any movie i want in perfect quality... never need to fill the hard drive with torrents again

i can even get sky sports & espn for free with it.

So movies/tv shows are not counted as a strike?

I always wonder, torrent sites don't contain 100% copyrighted material - there is a lot of free books/software up there too..how would these people monitoring know what was allowable or not?

The copyright cops join a torrent on an album, say, they're asked to protect but presumably don't download or upload material themselves. From there its just a matter of getting the IPs of others in the torrent and reporting these to the relevant ISP.

They can download all they want, they have permission from the copyright owners, how else would they verify what it was

Do they inform you of your 'strike' by letter or what?

VPN is the way to go. For about a tenner a month you're hidden from eircom for what ever online stuff you do, plus you can get watch BBC iPlayer etc.

Even less. Tunnelbear is only about $5 and Cyberghost always has deals. Plus you can use them on other devices.

Movies and TV shows every day for what must be 7 or 8 years now. Never gotten a single letter since the 3 strike rule came in.
I use Peerblock, I don't download music and I am a bit of a leecher. Maybe one or all of those explain it.
