SixDayRacing TV showing Rotteram. Live streaming, recorded and highlights. This one is pretty interesting as they're showin live power and cadence meter feeds. Plenty of instances of 130-140rpm.

That cadence and speed feed is interesting .. more info like this let's you appreciate what's happening and the efforts involved ... Out of interest I checked/reverse calculated 146rpm at 62kph (Michael Kreder @ 3:09) and looks like he's running something like a 51x15 ..

I can never work out gear inches and all the bloody online calculators fall short of actual, i.e. 50x15 is by all accounts 90", but they show it as 88" or similar.

51x15 would make sense (to me at least). I think some of the lads during the Nats ran similar. The 146rpm was a peak though, wasn't it rather than an average?

How does the derny racing work? It makes no sense.

My understanding is that it's down mostly to the derny drivers. They read the race and the rider and work away at winning. They get prizes too and some are more popular than some of the riders.

The races don't really look like races, it's an odd one, it looks quite subdued. Are all the dernys not limited to the same speed anyway?

This article says they can reach up to 90km/h?

That's mental, sundrive needs to get more derneys, the demonstration event can be held this year and the nationals next year!

Unlikely to happen, but if you're not doing Gorey this year, a trip to Herne Hill may be on the cards.

I read an interview with a six day racer and he said that 49/15 (88) was standard gearing for points, elimination and madison. Depends on the track too, Gent is very small. I find that people push bigger gears in Sundrive with a lower cadence, as it's more like riding on the road - no banking to contend with.
