I read his autobiography many years ago. It's about a million light years away from the regimented discipline of jockeys like Tony McCoy et al in this day and age. It's probably why the jockeys of today are able to prolong their careers, but still, there's something very pragmatic about a jockey downing a few brandies before going out to ride because he'd taken a bad fall earlier in the day and needed to dull the pain

RIP. I shook hands with him at our Point to Point in Dromoland about 17 years ago.
