NCT expired...

    Hi,

I moved to Ireland in 2012 and bought a car last year. I received an email today only that my NCT was going to expire on the 13/01/2014. Since the sign on my windscreen said just "january 2014" I thought I would be able to pass NCT until the end of January.

My NCT is scheduled for the 18/01/2014 and other NCT centers seem fully booked. How can I arrange to pass my NCT if it is expired? What if the Garda notices it? Will I be in trouble?

What's more... What if I fail my NCT and have to re-pass it? I had to wait 2 weeks and a half to schedule an appointment, if I have to reschedule it how can I make sure I repass it very shortly?

Also I have to get my tires changed. Can you recommend any place to do it?

    Thanks!

Don't panic you will be fine. My car passed its NCT last year, it was out of date by nearly six months at that stage. I was stopped at a Garda checkpoint one day for the usual tax and insurance checks ( which were both in date) , they didn't even comment on the NCT disc.

Once you have the test booked you will almost certainly be fine if you are stopped. Especially if its only a week out. You should have a confirmation text to show the booking, do you?

odds are you'll be fine op, my nct was out for a year and a half and the gardai never said anything, even at checkpoints!!

Print out your appointment and keep it in car. This will cover you when you get stopped. They nct centres have a ridiculous way of releasing appointment dates.

If you fail I think you have 30 days to get it retested. Again, the letter from the nct centre will cover you. When you get stopped.

By the way OP, the NCT does display the exact date of expiry. The month and year are the large digits but you will see 2 smaller digits before the month.

    e.g. 13-01-2014
