hello, i am hoping that ye could help me with my driving test. I have been driving for 2 years but want to do my exam soon. Could anybody tell me about the process invoved.

I know I must book the test but during the test I have a few questions - what is the total marks available for the test and what grade should i get to pass the exam?

I know there is a oral part to the exam and there are questions that the examiner would ask - these 18 questions are taken from the cards - does the driving instructor have a copy of these cards that i could learn and if so how many cards are there as i am very bad with the regard the oral exam.

I know that i should give hand signs also - could someone remind me of these hand signs please. thanks for all your help.:)

I know I must book the test but during the test I have a few questions - what is the total marks available for the test and what grade should i get to pass the exam?

The aim of the test is to get as few marks as possible. You start off with no marks on the test sheet, but every time you make a mistake the tester will mark you based on the severity.

A grade 1 is only something very minor. These are only points for you to improve on after the test, grade 1's have no effect on the outcome of the test.

Grade 2's are more serious, 8 is the max you are allowed, any more than that and you fail.

Grade 3's are an instant failure.
I know there is a oral part to the exam and there are questions that the examiner would ask - these 18 questions are taken from the cards - does the driving instructor have a copy of these cards that i could learn and if so how many cards are there as i am very bad with the regard the oral exam.

I get that telling someone about what you would do in certain situations while driving and actually driving in the car are two different things, but most of the questions are all things that you definitely need to know in order to drive. Things like "When can you park on a junction box" etc. If you don't know the answer then you should not be on the road.

As for questions taken from cards, I'm not sure if that's true. They have sheets laid out on the desk in the test centre filled with pictures of road signs and situations on the road. My tester asked me things like "When can you park on a single yellow line" and pointed to the picture of a single yellow line. What you really need to do is go back over your theory test book or CD. Especially the road signs part.

My driving instructor gave me a little booklet that have the top most asked questions in it, so maybe drop into an driving instructor(preferably the one you did lessons with) and ask if they'd give you one. Don't worry too much about the questions though, max you'll get for getting the, wrong is one grade 2.
I know that i should give hand signs also - could someone remind me of these hand signs please. thanks for all your help.:)

This should have the hand signals on it.

It's also possible you may be asked to open up the bonnet and show the tester you know things in the engine. So make sure you know where your brake fluid, engine coolant, screen wash and engine oil are. Also how you would check your oil. Same goes for all of your vehicle controls, you can be asked on anything inside the car such as lights, wipers, hazard lights, heater, rear window heater and also how you would check to see if your lights were working when you're on your own (Drive up to a reflective surface such as a window)

Any other questions feel free to ask.

This was answered above but for clarification there are NO total marks for the exam. The test is marked based on faults, Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3. To pass you must demonstrate as few faults as possible.

Grade 1 faults have no effect on the outcome of the exam.

Grade 2 faults are more serious, there are 3 ways to fail with these:
9 or more Grade 2 faults overall
6 or more Grade 2 faults under one heading (e.g. position, mirrors, etc.)
4 faults on one line (e.g. position turning right, mirrors moving off, etc.)

Grade 3 faults are dangerous or potentially dangerous faults. ANY Grade 3 fault results in a fail.

Before your test read the Rules of the Road, you can buy this as a book or download it from www.rulesoftheroad.ie. This has all the hand signals and road signs in it, and the other questions you could be asked will be based on the book.

Good luck with the test and I would recommend booking some pretest lessons with your Driving Instructor, they will be able to correct any faults you have before your exam and answer any questions you have in relation to it
