Colon Cleansers: Your Personal Experiences?

I have decided to give this a go as it's the start of a new year and all that. Has anyone else had any positive experiences? I'm aware of the lack of evidence to prove they're in any way beneficial but there are some anecdotal claims. OK, so as some of you will probably know, the theory is that some of us may have a build up of mucus in our colons, especially if we have been eating rubbish for years, and that traditional, high fibre foods may not be enough to flush it out.

I have bought two items. The first item was a 500g bag of psyllium husks and the second item was a bottle of Nature's Secret Super Cleanse, which is a blend of 14 herbs with so called healthy bacteria added. The psylium husks are supposed to expand in water and scrape your insides in a rougher way than other fibre sources. The Super Cleanse may be just a fancy laxative but I'll try that in conjunction with the husks.

What are your own personal experiences with these types of products? I'm not expecting much, I'm just trying it out of curiosity.

    load of crap :)

Seriously, the body has the perfect tools to detox. If your drinking plenty of water, eating a balanced diet with loads of fresh veg and stay away from processed foods particularly those containing wheat and sugars your fine.

psyllium husks are a serious fiber and can be useful if your trying to restrict calories or stabilize blood sugars. I've used them when cutting weight for competitions in the past. Be sure and drink loads of water with them.

Most don't do anything super special and 'cleansing' but the psyllium husks in particular will help to regulate you like clockwork. Do take a lot of water with them though. I tend towards having a sluggish... err... I excretory cycle, a change in diet or lifestyle will invariably lead to once a week expulsion (not fun) but my personal favourite is prune juice. Cheaper than psyllium and loaded with soluble fibre, you just have to get past the taste of sweaty socks and rubbish bags :D

If you're regular that's all the cleansing your body needs. Any changes in stool shape or colour will tell you if there's anything lacking in your diet.

In the past I found Triphala powder to be a great GI cleanser:
    triphala
Basically 3 types of dried fruit ground to a powder, a big spoonful mixed with water before bed. It's possibly one of the worst tasting things on the planet (in a strangely good way) and has been used in India for centuries, works great. If your going to try it, just be absolutely sure that it is from a good source and has been tested for metal contaminants as there have been issues in the past with foodstuffs coming from that part of the world. The place I got mine from (irish company) doesn't seem to stock it anymore, but it is freely available on the web.

Eat properly. Drink lots of water. Exercise.

Oh I am healthy and eat fairly well. I'm just doing this out of curiosity and maybe for the psychological benefit because it's the beginning of a new year. And yes, the husks are serious fibre.

The best colon cleanse i did and still do daily is drink 100% aloe vera gel not concentrate or 40% aloe juice etc... from a movement IBS issue - there is no issue now. We all know the benefits aloe has on a burn etc... so why not use it from the inside out.
