500km in a day

So last year I completed 1800km's around Ireland in 10 days and this year I would like to do another cycle challenge.

I am currently based in London and have a 4km loop that has very limited traffic.

I am considering doing a solo 24 hour cycle for charity and wanted to know if anyone has any experience or advice in something similar.

I presume he's saying the boredom would drive you insane :D

You are planning on doing the 4km continuously for 24 hours?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66 ✭✭Ciaran OHara

Yes. Continuous. I understand the boredom but thats why its a challenge. Its no real difference to guys doing ultra events. I'd like to do it on a flat open route but it would be a logistical nightmare.

125 laps. Get the lap boards ready and someone/many people ready to count em off for you!

Maybe try doing it for 4 or 6 hours as a test. Would give you a good idea what your planning on doing.

40laps of Patricks hill and I was bored. A flat 4km would drive me bananas.
    Best of luck.

Will be doing a few 309-400km cycles this year. The varied terrain is what I enjoy.
Mizen to Malin in a meandering route, tailwind most likely?

BTW Charlie Miller rode 3,369km in 6 days in 1897 at Madison Square Gardens if you wish to test yourself further!

Are you actually planning to hit 500km in 24 hours as the thread title suggests? That's an average of 20.83 km/h if you cycle continuously for 24 hours, if you factor any stoppages you may need to take that goes up, that might not sound as much of a pace for the first few hours but surely that couldn't be kept over the whole 24 hours. I know you'd have an average higher early on, but that sounds like it would be a very hard target to hit.

Thanks Rizzodun. This is exactly what I am looking for. Some thoughts and feedback and how hard it would actually be. I have considered average speeds and the fact that it would be hard to maintain. I have also considered the option of having a small group of riders to help me maintain a pace. Obviously individual riders taking a couple of hours at a time but this may be cheating.

Why not compete in the Mersey Roads 24 ? I think the winning distance is about 650 km so 500 should be doable.

    Edit: It was 518km

Edit Edit: Nope that was miles !

    Just reading about this earlier on today. A good read;

    Some distance covered.

I did 295kms last year in nine hours four minutes ride time. Nine twenty in total including stops for food and drinks. That was mostly done in the company of one other rider with maybe 50kms in a large group and another 50kms in small groups. The average speed was approx 32.6kph IIRC. PrePredominantly flat terrain with some hills but a crazy amount of cross winds for tge first half and then head winds for the second half!

500kms is doable in my opinion. My brother, who I did that event with did a 24 hour solo race last year also and completed 602kms of a loop with significant hills in it.

perhaps you might consider the le mans 24 hour bike race. Historic circuit closed to traffic but will have company of thousands of other cyclists.
The le mans aspect may increase public interest for fund raising.

Also you also have the rad am ring on the 24km loop at the nurburgring in germany.
http://www.radamring.de/en/ IIRC there was a poster on here who did a couple of years ago

Edit it was RAAM and the thread from 2009 is here

Just need a Garmin with autolap

Once did 115 laps of Sundrive before they fenced it in (but that was less than 2 hours in the saddle...)

    Typo; that's a few 300-400km cycles not 309 400km cycles!
    Charlie Miller is mental though

I was thinking more for moral support than anything else really. 500 laps of anything would do your nut in.

Why not do an Audax instead? Audax Ireland organise 400km and 600km events. I'm sure there's similar ones in Britain. Doing laps for 500km seems like quite a boring way of hitting the distance.

    You can do it.
It's impossible you'll never make it.
My aunt did 459km on a bmx in 23 hours.

It doesn't matter what feed back you get here. There are a mix of audax legends and entry level losers like me who will comment on boards.
Why don't you go out for 10 hours and see what happens. I'd be interested to see how you go.
You might come back and say that was great craic, I can't wait for do a longer cycle and then try 15 hours next time or you might think it was too boring, I'll do a long distance event instead.
    Best of luck with it.

4km loops would do your head in I reckon, other than that no reason why it can't be done.

I'd expect it's doable with the right training & preparation but personally I'd want 20 laps of a 25km loop rather than 125 laps of a 4km loop just for sanity and variety!
