I never heard much good about Singer or Toyota tbh, I would recommend a Husqvarna or brother first and foremost (they used them in my dressmaking college and are very easy to use and extremely hardy machines) or I also love my Janome.

P.s don't buy a machine in Argos! Buy from a proper dealer so you know you can take it back to an actual person who knows their stuff if you run into any problems. They are usually the best person to service it for you too (machines need servicing every now and then like a car to stay in good shape).

I travelled to the Singer centre in Waterford for my Janome, got to test drive lots of brands and models of machines while discussing all my needs with the owner before deciding on a machine. He also showed me the basic set up as well as lots of cool tricks specific to my model.

He recommended I bought his display model to save e100 and I also bought an overlocker at the time and got an extremely good deal with plenty of accessories thrown in. you won't get that in Argos!

Particularly if you're only starting out you are going to need help from your dealer sooner or later, even if it's just a phone call for a small technical issue or for advice it's great to know you have that option.

Thanks! I decided to get a new foot and see if my current machine works ok after that.

Does anyone have any idea where I could get a free motion foot and needles for quilting to be used with a Silver 1008 sewing machine? South Dublin preferably. Or online anywhere?

Mod NoteThreads merged with a redirect to this thread on the main forum as I'm sure that those who have responded to your query above will be able to assist you - no need for a new thread.

Look at the SILVER sewing machines website

    www.silversewing.co.uk

and here is a list of their Republic of Ireland stockists - contact them to see what spare parts they may have?

You did right by not changing to another machine - stick with the Silver machine - its a good brand - and you will soon get the hang of it - we are such a 'throwaway society' its great to get something second hand - my machine which I have for about 18 years, I bought second hand when it was about 50 years old and its never let me down 8-)
