Say you go exploring in a group of four people, none of whom know each other. The place you go to is pitch black, but you all have torches.

At one point, all the torches go out & you're left in the black for one minute. You can see nothing. Everyone stops moving and there is no sound.

When the torches come back on, would you rather there be five people in your group or three?

For 3 people, turn to paragraph 312.
For 5 people, turn to paragraph 64.
To draw your broadsword and attack, turn to paragraph 12.

Five. He might be a nice guy who got lost.

Five. If the new person was a threat then he/she would be outnumbered anyway so hopefully it'd all be ok. The hell of having to cope with having someone you know go missing would be horrific.

(If the 5th person happened to be Johnny Depp/Hugh Jackman/Jake Gyllenhaal that would be all the better.)

What about four and a half? Why discriminate against little people?

So its a choice between everyone being present (you went with four other people so 5 originally in the group) or two people missing. Everyone still there seems less hassle so I pick that.

    5.

The extra person is probably the chap that fixed the torches. He'll be useful to keep with you on the expedition.

Is it a person or a dog like in the famous five?

I never understood why the dog was part of the famous five but wasn't part of the secret seven.

Or he may be the fcuker that did punch their lights out!

    Roll dice.

If below 6, turn to page 27.

If over 6, turn to page 51.

If you still have the Wizard's cloth, turn to page 30.

Timmy wasn't part of that posse

I'd have to ask the fifth guy how he managed to join us without making a sound. That's pretty unnerving, if a little impressive.

    There would only be two.
I scattered the minutes the lights went out and took the best lookin woman.

Not with 4; in a group of 4 so it's one person missing

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

If that was the case, he would probably have been spotted earlier.

Unless he has 4 hands and could punch out 4 torches simultaneously.

In this situation it should be obvious that the other two/four are plotting against you and you need to make plans to kill them all
