I live in a country area, small cul de sac road with about 45 houses. Every one bar my next door neighbour uses a bin collection service. Neighbour decides he's 'composting ' his waste. Problem is his composting is throwing his waste food on an open crate and it has now attracted rats, lots of them.
No talking to this guy. Can't let kids and wife down back garden, wife having chemo so she can't risk picking up anything .
How/ to whom do I contact about this, ?

I think that the county council would assist here or you could also try the HSE Environmental Health Department.

Ask him politely to stop being a dirty bastard and use a bin like a normal member of society?

I'm just going to deny anything else you said there and stick with what I want this thread to be from the title suggested. So here's my solution. Eat more fiber. Try and get your daily clock for the morning. This allows you to move faster so you can be a more productive worker. I'd suggest you eat a favourite of mine which is raisins. Small light and yet portable. I hope this sorts out that weight problem you were talking about.

Man you should get on to your local councillor first thing tomorrow. That kind of crap isn't on in this day and age, especially in built up areas.

Probably no point in jumping through the hoops and reporting it directly to the proper dept. since it'll take ages to rectify that way. Local elections are just around the corner and it's issues like this that the people elected should be dealing with and aware of.

No harm in not having your bins collected but people are bound by laws to properly dispose of it otherwise.

Tried that, his response was some spiel about the bin cost ( private collection)is a tax he's not going to pay.

So he would prefer to have a rat infestation over paying for the bins?

Throw some rat poison down if there's no talking to him.

I'd be worried about other neighbour's pets and other wildlife..

Rats would not go for a proper raw green and brown compost heap. Is he putting meat and other cooked food in there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,585 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

If he has no bins he's probably depending on the rats and birds to get rid of it,hence the open crate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,308 ✭✭✭downonthefarm

Can he not burn it if he is too scabby to pay the bins?
All my neighbours are doing it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,147 ✭✭✭PizzamanIRL

Put a fake warning notice into his letterbox.

Forget the councillors, take a few photos if you can, and call in to the council offices to see the litter warden and their environmental officer if they have one.

Surely you're not allowed burn stuff any more? Pretty sure you haven't been for a long time.

Call the HSE OP, and in the meantime call the local paper.

    Yes, and eggs.
    Some paper/containers as well.

I'd like to echo the other suggestions on this thread:

    1. Call the council and ask them to send the environmental health officer out for an inspection
    2. Call the HSE and inform them of the rat infestation
    3. If you're still getting nowhere, get onto your local councillors and/or the local papers

Ah, your man has rats coming over the fence, also burning pollutes the land and sends toxins into he air for the rest of us to breathe. There's nothing about this that's being 'a busy body'. Would you be a busy body if the rest of us were dumping rubbish on the roads and you did something about it?

    Daft attitude.

Didn't say you burnt your rubbish either, you just seemed to be defending others who did/burying your head in the sand.

    Lol, busy body.

The standard retort when somebody has the temerity to point out that somebody is being a selfish cunt.

Up there in the pantheon of other retarded Irish classics such as "begrudger".

I fukcing hate rats (hope that doesn't make me a racist).

What do the other residents say about this? Do you have a residents association? Don't feel you're on your own dude.

This is all good advice, but it might be worth giving your man an ultimatum that you'll be taking this course of action if he doesn't stop. You have to live next to him like

Set up automated machine gun turrets to kill the rats.

Or catch the rats, kill them, and throw their dead bodies onto his back yard.

Vermin will be attracted to green and brown compost heap. It;s not just food they're after but shelter and warmth too.

OP it's private property, therefore if it is a proper compost heap there's little the council can do about it. If he is disposing of other materials then perhaps the environmental protection agency.
