VAT claim

    Hi there,
Quick question about VAT receipts. I have a lot of receipts from 2013 which are eligible to be offset against my VAT return. However quite a high percentage of these receipts don't specify the VAT amount; therefore I believe these are not deemed as proper VAT receipts. However the shops that I got the receipts from would be VAT registered. Where does that leave me in the case of a VAT audit? Would the auditor accept that even though the receipt doesn't explicitly specify the VAT amount that the (local) business is clearly registered for VAT and that the receipt will do. Or do they view the world in black and white; no VAT amount on receipt means that it is not eligible and therefore I would be looking at a non-compliance issue with the audit?

    Thanks

Just a further comment on this. Some of the receipts have the retailers VAT number printed on them without the VAT amount specified. Do these count as valid VAT receipts?

If this isn't the best forum to get answers to this then is there a more appropriate one, either on boards.ie or elsewhere?

    Thanks

For trivial amounts no Revenue auditor is likely to query a claim for the VAT element on the purchase of something that clearly includes VAT. That's not to say that it is technically correct - it's just reality.

For larger amounts it is generally your job to request a formal VAT receipt from the retailer. If you still have the till receipts you might find they're willing to do this now - it makes no particular difference to them.
