A fake NCT cert or a genuine mistake?

So I came across this on Donedeal today,

All well and good, decent looking car, but then noticed the NCT cert,
    25764800.jpeg

Firstly, I think I last saw that font on a cert in around 2005.
Not sure why the red is in the top corner.
And if it had been tested in May 2013, shouldn't it have a blue/purple cert?
Also, apparently its a Ford Mondoe :pac:

    Ffs, haha

must be an import. Otherwise it would be 2014

The purple cert came into effect in June 2013 so the color would be okay.

Seems very odd about the typo though.

I thought cars under 10 years old got a two year cert?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 677 ✭✭✭dougie-lampkin

The new certs came in around June 2013, so the yellow could be OK. That font and diamond shaped logo hasn't been in use since ~2009 though. And if the cert says Mondoe, then the log book and any online car checks must also say Mondoe, as they're taken from the same database rather than entered by the tester. The test date is wrong for an original Irish car and it's not an import. Simply, the disc must be a fake.

The seller just screams "dodgy" at me, look at the rest of his stuff: http://cars.donedeal.ie/find/all/for-sale/Ireland/?uid=405485

Putting the reg in to motorcheck.ie it comes back spelt correctly as Mondeo, pretty sure the same database for tax disc is used for NCT for car model.

exactly...it's an 04 so NCT would be to 2014 UNLESS it was an import which go from date of first reg in Ireland

    The number is too low.

Looking at his other ads, his ability to spell seems to be every bit as good as that of the person who typed up the NCT disc. Coincidence?

I know data protection is an issue, but the NCT really could use having a system where you could stick in the NCT disc number and it would return the basic details such as make/model, reg, test date etc (things you already know based on the disc).

how do you know it isn't an import? Could have been imported when fairly new

It was a 9 year old car tested in 2013; the test would be for two years, expiring in 2015, no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 526 ✭✭✭conor2469

Probably just a simple typo. If you go to the the trouble of creating a fraudelent NCT cert you are not going to spell the cars model incorrectly!

EDIT: Actually disregard my comment above, I just checked his other ads, I'm surprised he spelt NCT correctly......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

I'd agree, the spelling makes it 99% definite!

it would be tested at 8 and 10 years .

not if it was imported in 2004...long shot though

Say the NCT expired on year 8 and it went without a test for a year, then it would get a two year cert that would take it to 2015 though, no?

Is it not that the date is always dated to the registration date of the car, or is it that the cert is only valid until the next test date regardless?

Not saying it's the case here.... but there was a story a couple of months ago on the radio about a huge amount of blank NCT certs being stolen from their office somewhere.

    Edit: link here: http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/850-nct-certs-stolen-for-use-on-unsafe-vehicles-610054.html

Im not sure how reliable it is, but if you enter an import reg into Motorcheck (say 10D120123) then it will tell you that the car is an import. Im not sure where it gets this information from though; it might just be that the system knows that 10D120xxx is an import.

If it was imported in 2004 would it not be impossible for it to have a 2015 NCT expiry from a 2013 test? It's also not flagged as an import on motorcheck, cartell or mywheels ;)

(Also, an imported Mondeo LX? What poor English sod bought that new, it's a paddy special :pac:)

It's not an import. The UK spec Mondeo LX had cruise control buttons on the steering wheel and electric door mirrors as standard. That one is a Paddy spec special.

Judging by the state of the adverts this guy has on DD, Id say its highly likely that this is the case here tbh!

no , it would be backdated to the last test (unless it was less than 3 months until the next due date)

Sorry, I don't get you. If it was imported in 2004 it would NCT '08,'10,'12,'14,'15, no?

Ah okay, sorry I thought it was backdated to the last anniversary of the date of registration.

Anybody who would consider buying off someone who prints adds like these, needs their head checked . The grammar in these adds would put me off 100 times quicker than the "dodgy nct cert" would !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 866 ✭✭✭renofan

Has to be fake. Font is not correct plus if you type the reg in here it comes up as being both un-taxed and un-nctd. All other reg's that I put in of cars that are nctd come up as being so.

Seller must be fairly brazen to put up the reg though.

it not an import just did a free history check on it. ( motorcheck.ie ) .and if it was an import it always said "this car uk import!"

Agreed - hard to see any data protection issues with that; considering most/all of that info is available on a motorcheck report.

As was pointed out by a previous poster, there was a f**k load of blank certs stolen last year if it were me i'd walk, that cert is very likely a fake,or maybe an older genuine altered cert, that font is gone a good few years

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

it is odd he has put the number up on DD. Is there any chance he bought it that way and is an innocent victim of the forger?

Does the last 5 looked photoshopped to anyone else? Looks much darker than the rest of the numbers on the cert.

    Stolen NCT Certificate Serial Numbers..

    From NCT Web site...

    http://www.ncts.ie/nctcertificatesserialnumbers.html

NCT certificates and discs containing the following serial numbers
    3711250 - 3711750
    3830751 -3831250
were stolen during a recent robbery at an NCT centre. If you are purchasing a second hand vehicle we would urge that you please check the serial number on the NCT disc to ensure it is not stolen.
If you have any doubts regarding the validity of an NCT Certificate then please contact NCT  on 1890 200 670 and we will be quickly able to confirm the validity of the NCT certificate for you

Has anybody called him ? His name is vasi ! The toiota is a bargain sure the new timing belt kit and brake discs have to be worth near the €500 asking price so it's basically a free car.................
Also vasi is a Hindu name I wonder where he is from ?

The SIMI car history check we use, shows the NCT expiry date as Feb 2012, it shows the road tax expiry date as Oct 2013, and the last date of sale as Sep 2013.
Its not an import, as in imported by an individual other than Ford themselves.

    In summary :

Even if the nct was real (which we know its not now) , the sheer inability of the user to even spell should have put you off the car. So now we have a ford mundane-o with no tax, no nct and big miles being sold by somebody who appears to be borderline retarded and with absolutely no command of the english language .

    Standard day at donedeal really..
