    Hi ,
I saw this photo in the Time images of the year collection , and it was taken with a Nikon D700 at 600mm - the Aperture was not mentioned.

I'd imagine it would need to be quite narrow f/22 or less to get all in focus ?

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the bokeh effect get bigger the higher you go on mm ?

Probably stopped down a bit. Also probably quite a bit back which gives you some space to play with. The observers are visibly out of focus already, the surfer appears to be in focus, kind of hard to tell with such a small image. Still a stunner.

I'm not entirely sure how to parse this sentence but have a play around with dofmaster.com it's a little online tool you can use to play around with focal lengths, subject distances, and f-stops to get an idea of how they affect DOF.

Sorry maybe I should clear it up, what I mean is at 35mm f/10 can get you a nice landscape shot with all in focus - including foreground subjects.

However at 400 mm and f/10 it would tend to give a bokeh affect for the background.

if by 'bokeh affect' you mean 'out of focus' then yes, probably, if you were focusing on something close. However it's also a function of subject distance. Focus on a subject close enough and I can toss the background out of focus using a 35mm lens.
