I am a primary school teacher and I am looking for some nice ideas for covering clay in art classes.

    ON the following page

    http://lakesidepottery.com/Pages/Pictures/Kids%20finished%20art%20work.html

I quite like the shoe one for kids - Would these be too difficult to make.

Could anyone offer any other suggestions of something this age group might enjoy making (average age is 10). We mainly use air dry clay I think. Kids could have option to paint or glaze a different day.

    Would appreciate any ideas thanks

I would be inclined to show them how to make a thumb pot, and get them to make one, then let them loose to use their imagination. Give the ones who are able scope to make something more complex and the ones who are less so opportunity to make something easier. If you want to give them an area like bugs/ snakes/animals - fish are very satisfactory and good to paint (acrylics) you will avoid the inevitable hearts from the girls and footballs from the boys (been there!)

Or you could show them how to do coil building - thumb pots and coil pots are the first two types of clay modelling that were developed historically.
