Advice on career path

Hello everybody! Maybe not the best post for New Year's eve but I'm in need of a little guidance!

I am 25 years old and have been employed since the age of 15 continuously whilst at School/Uni and then 'after-study'.

I have worked predominantly in hotels as a receptionist as well as as Duty Manager. I have also, in-between jobs, worked in various call centres in customer care.

I am fluent a graduate of Russian language and have lived and worked extensively in Russia in the-above-mentioned industries. It seems however that I am at a disadvantage in some respect here as the Russian jobs in Dublin would rather higher 'natives' and even though my Russian is at advanced/native-level (which many Russians believe is impossible as a foreigner) I do not seem to get called for any of the jobs I apply for.

What I'd like to know is what career paths and jobs do you think someone with my experience should be following and in which I should have a decent chance or at least, be a ''suitable'' candidate for? My salary expectations are in the region of 24-26K and I am hard working and dedicated?

I know this post might seem a little general but I'd be keen to hear your thoughts as it is beginning to feel quite pointless and tiresome being stuck on the minimum wage and my skills and degree 'ageing'. Of course in an ideal world, I'd be looking to work within languages which is my passion however I'd also be very keen to basically explore other professions which could provide me with a 'decent' and stable income and am keen to hear what kind of positions you feel match my experience?

    Hi Tuathanach,

I am not sure what your qualifications are in and your Russian language experience combined with your customer service expertise are strong skill sets. Don't underestimate this - sell and market these in great detail. Big them up on your CV, letters of application, LinkedIn profile etc.

There are a variety of industries where this experience is of value - consumer goods (Irish companies looking to sell/market there products in Russia) IT and professional services.

The IT and web areas probably offer the most attractive opportunity at certain levels. Facebook, google etc have to a need for Russian language skills. See this role here as an example, that with focus and dedication you potentially could position yourself for in the future.

Alternatively as a way into these areas you could set up your own translation services company or possibly apply to some of the translation service companies? Perhaps offer your services on gumtree initially and do up flyers and then drop into prospective companies? At least this way you are proactive about your chosen career and shows to employers that you are actively pursuing your interests.

    Hope this helps.
