If it was a really large muscular man, he would have the same problem with being cramped but you can bet he wouldn;t be ranting like that!

Nothing wrong with being large and muscular, being obese is not acceptable, also the crew of the airline was his biggest gripe.

So you would be okay being uncomfortable and squashed in your seat as long as the person was wide with rigid muscle instead of soft fat?

How is being obese not acceptable? I get that its not physically appealing and it isn't good for healthcare budgets, and I personally don;t understand how some one can let themselves reach that point without an underlying medical condition.
BUT who gives someone the right to say that someones physical appearance is "unacceptable" (providing exceptions for gratitious attention seeking things like nudity and swasticas tattoed on foreheads)

No I would not be okay with it, however being a large bodybuilder type guy is ok from society's POV. Being morbidly obese is nor. I have had to move from a person with rank body odour before also and he was of a normal stature.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,735 ✭✭✭Vincent Vega

Guy sounds like a right prick to be honest.
    Also:
I tried to relocate myself without the assistance of the Couldnotgiveas*** triplets, but unfortunately everyone with a row to themselves was now lying down.
Judging by the language he used in the letter, I'd imagine it was beyond him to take the obvious approach of having a quiet word with one of these passengers, and seeing if they'd be kind enough help him out.
Seems like a horrible person, so, he got what he deserved I guess.

But that's not the point here. The point is that the guy was being squashed in his seat, irrespective of what was causing the other person's large mass.

Was thinking that too. Oh a really spiteful, aggressive email from the safety of his keyboard - my, what a brave soul.

Ohh I see now your original post had nothing to do with the subject matter other than to point out your own view on being obese. Nevermind then.

There's two things being conflated here - the practicalities of space allocation for very fat people (which could be done quite simply without embarrassing the fat person) and the way health has turned in to a new morality so people preach about it even when there are no practical concerns that affect them.

It's not someone's appearance that is unacceptable in this case - it's their mass and weight in a confined space.

Obese people should be mocked and abused. No way should the world bend to them for their immoral gluttony.

Only on the internet though, eh? I'm guessing you'd never mock or abuse them to their face.. unless you're a cnut of the highest order.

Agreed. If gingers are fair game then it's only natural that obese people should be too.

I would much prefer it, yes - at least it would be less repulsive. Muscles also don't have a tendency to "pour" over armrests and the like. A bodybuilder would either fit in their seat or not, whereas a morbidly obese person could squeeze into something and then spill out beyond it. *eugh*

Anyone that big should book two seats, but it's a fairly irrelevant comparison; there are about a thousand times more obese people than there are massively muscular people.

I travel a lot and thankfully only once in my entire time flying have I ever had a similar situation, I was seated first and saw this huge guy walking towards me. In my head I was begging him not to sit beside me, but of course my prayers were not answered. It was frustrating but it was only a 3 hour flight so I got over it.

On the flip side, I was flying home from ZA and this sexy girl took a seat beside me, the whole flight was like a date, got her number and when I went back to ZA I ended up scoring her.

The latter not being something which is in any way exclusive to overweight people. It's such a silly line in this day and age... like it's totally fine to be overindulgent and wasteful once you don't get heavier at the same time!

Most people in developed countries these days would be considered gluttons if the definition was to be applies properly.

How long is a flight from Perth to Sydney ? I would imagine he was on the plane for about 2-3 hours. If so, then I wouldn't really be bothered by it. It's not like it was a long haul flight. You could make do sitting beside an obese man. Just make sure to breath through your mouth.

Less chance of a bad smell.

Why do people say breath through your mouth when dealing with a disgusting smell? Thats even worse, tasting it instead of smelling it.

to all the posters here saying "ohhh, it's not too bad", "breath through your mouth" etc ........I can tell you now, if it were you that had to sit beside this smelly fat tub of lard that passes as a human being, you'd be up in arms too.....

smelly fucnkers like that should be made strip in public, and thrown a bar of disinfectant soap, and powerhosed from a distance.........these durty funkers should be treated like vermin.....

Yeah, his predicament was pretty crap, but if he had been nicer he'd probably have my sympathy.

In fairness, things like this ought to be dealt with prior to boarding. Cabin crew should be left to deal with other issues, not easily avoidable disputes.

I don't understand why some airlines don't designate people seats beforehand.
In the case of excessively overweight people, surely they too would be aware of the discomfort that being seated beside someone would cause both them and the other person, and would probably like their extra space and to avoid those problems.

Booking forms should offer people the option to choose 2 adjacent seats at a slightly marked down price on selected flights.

Just because weight is a touchy issue with people doesn't mean we should just turn a blind eye to the potential problems until they're unavoidable!

Been stuck beside people with awful body odour in places like the cinema and on transport far too often.
Best advice I have is to always carry strong breath mints.
Most times they do the trick of blocking out the smell ;)

    )

He said he booked an exit aisle seat so presumably the obese person did this also in order to have more room. He probably knew someone would have a hard time squeezing past him in a regular row.

I can imagine that it must have been uncomfortable to be squashed next to a large person for over 4 hours but because he seems like such a dick I don't really have any sympathy for him. Presumably he was equally dickish to the flight attendants which is why they weren't very inclined to help him out. I actually feel sorry for the obese guy, he might have an idea this is about him. How humiliating would that be.

He is well known in Australia apparently from previous blogs. Prone to a bit of exaggeration and hyperbole I would say.

And it must have been a slow news day at the Mail seeing as this happened a month ago. I know Australia is a long way away but even so.

Jaysus from reading that letter you'd swear the fat lad gave this guy a lapdance or something.

If he demonstrated the same attitude face to face that he did in the letter then it doesn't surprise me that the cabin crew didn't help him out. I have found if you treat cabin crew with respect they will entertain any reasonable request on a flight.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,395 ✭✭✭✭mikemac1

I thought only fit and able people were allowed in the emergency exit row as you may have to operate the door in an emergency. So if you're like this guy in the letter or esprcially if you aren on crutches you'd be told to move.

Or have I been watching too many films?

Always find it weird that so many people are nasty and spiteful towards obese people as if the weight of a stranger impacts in any way on your daily life. Ireland has more than 50% of the population overweight (or obese, cant remember the latest statistic). I wasnt aware the other 50% were judgmental a%%holes. Look around you people, overweight and obese people are now everywhere, you cant avoid them, and you are actually in the minority being slim and fit. Why all the hatred?

They do impact me. It's obscene to consume so much uneeded meat and other foods when you consider the environmental impact. They also are more likely to suffer from heart disease and cancer which hits the funding of the public health system.
