Adding Centup (micro donation) to posts?

    How do,
A thread in AH got me thinking about this. Basically centup is a company set up for micro donations to blogs/podcasts you like. Or anything online really. Not like paypal donations, all much simpler and focuses on smaller donations (25c is the default 'tip'). Half goes to who you're tipping and the other half goes to a charity you choose when setting up your profile. I know that if another poster gives me really useful advice, I would like to throw them a small tip to say thank you. Would it be to out of the way to implement this beside the thanks button? Have a look at their video anyway and see what you guys think. I'm sure there's a glaringly obvious reason why this can't be done but on paper it seems like it could be a good idea?

how would it benefit boards as a business to implement such a (no doubt costly) system that pay charities and posters but not boards?

I'm not sure how it would be costly to boards? Apart from the the developers time but once it's done I can't see where any extra costs would come from? Centup take care of all payments and they take a small fee for the trouble from your donation (just found this out, 12c to the poster, 12c to the charity and 1c to centup) It may reward boards by in turn rewarding their users, thus making them happy to use their site? Also, I wonder if the SSF charity could be the charity of choice for boards? there's incentive I guess?

You're talking about setting every single boards user up with a centup account automatically and adding a link to it on each post. Thats no small feat.

And to be honest I dont think its worth it to add a monetary incentive to get donations from posts. I think it would create a lot more hassle for boards dealing with the ne'er-do-well's singing up to try exploit it for very little benefit for a tiny amount of posters.

Might be an option for posters to sign up to maybe, with SSF as the beneficiary?
Definitely couldn't be auto managed, would have to be something a poster subscribed to, but, might make post of the day a little more meaningful, posters less inclined to thank on a whim if there was a charge involved....

    ;)

I'm not taking about that. I'm no developer but I would think the centup option would be opt in. The button would be greyed out or something for non-centup users. You could still simply 'thank' posters for free but people who have centup could also donate. The choice is there.

You may have a point there. I wouldn't want boards to turn into a load of new regs trying their best to solicit donations from users. Bear in mind though, these are very small donations.

Another thought I had which doesn't work in it's favour is this. If the site is compromised, a malicious user could post something and force another user to tip it. I'm not sure what centup has to protect against something like this.

Nice idea but I'm not for it generally for a bulletin board such as this. There'd be no end of thanks whoring witty posts.
I'm sure there are many specialised technical forums out there where this is a great idea for.

Oh hey guys. I'm one of the founders of CentUp. Randomly found this discussion via an internet stalking session (we're all so damn vain now...what with the selfies and google alerts).

Anyways, implementing on a board might be tricky, but not impossible. Obviously there are many reasons beyond logistics why it would or wouldn't be a good idea. Anyways, anyone can feel free to shoot me a note if you want to chat more about it. <snip>.

We're trying to get more bloggers/musicians/podcasters on board to try out the button and earn some extra money for themselves and great charities.

    Hi lenkendall,
If you would like to represent CentUp officially on Boards.ie, please drop a mail to us on reps@boards.ie. Please don't post again in the meantime. Thanks :)
