    Hi guys,

Ill be going to oz in mid January. I have decided to keep my car when im in oz. My car tax will expire in May. Is it possible to claim this back?
Likewise is it possible to declare the car off the road for 2 years or is it a max of one year?

The most you can declare it of the road for is a year, AFAIK you cannot claim back tax just because the car is off the road unless you are in the army and travelling abroad.

If you can prove beforehand that the car will be garaged and proof of travel it can be done, its at the motor tax office discretion but you can apply, if worse comes to worse and they say no you are able to transfer it to another car. As long as someone declares it off the road in April of 2015 for another year it will be ok, if not when you get home transfer it to a new owners name, pay the tax for 3 months, then transfer it back to your name.

It is possible in certain circumstances, to claim a refund of motor tax. Your application for a refund, should be made directly to you local motor tax office, on Form RF120 (pdf). Circumstances where you may claim a refund of motor tax include; The vehicle has been scrapped/destroyed or sent permanently out of the State,The vehicle has been stolen and has not been recovered by the owner,The vehicle has not been taken out or used in a public place at any time since the issue of the current disc,The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of illness, injury or other physical disability, to use the vehicle,The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of absence from the state for business or educational purposes, to use the vehicle,The owner of the vehicle has ceased, because of service overseas with the Defence Forces, to use the vehicle.Tax discs must be surrendered immediately as refunds are generally calculated from the first of the month following the surrender of the disc. A minimum of three unexpired whole calender months must be left on the disc when surrendered. Where a vehicle has been scrapped you will need a certificate of destruction issued by an End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Authorised Treatment Facility.

I don't think it's a great idea for a car to be let lie for so long. Will it at least be garaged?

I've never heard of transferring tax from one car to another. Any links?

Why does the garaging part matter? My parents will turn on the engine every so often.

I was always under the impression that motor tax was not transferable from one car to another. I know you could get a refund alright under certain circumstances outlined above.

No I specifically asked in the Ballymun tax office a couple of years ago and the girl told me it can be done but same as refunds it under certain rules, you had to fill a form in the office and submit it and wait for a reply

You'll come back to a pile of mould.
Cars left for that long closed up will get very damp and mouldy, DAMHIK.

Unless the car is worth nothing or is a one off I would sell it as the car will need work to get it back on the road when you return and depending on how it has been stored may be ruined in that time.

If it was me and it was say a 2005 VW Golf or something along those lines I would sell it now and buy a similar one when you return, in theory you should be able to sell your 2005 now and then buy a 2007 in 2 years time for the same money :D.

That's grand then. There are no moving parts anywhere else or anything that could possibly deteriorate from lack of use over 2 years.

    Among other things....
I came back from a 3 week holiday and my brakes had seized.
Your battery will also go. Your tyres will rot. God only knows what will happen to the brake fluid, oil, coolant....
I'm guessing its not a classic ferrari so sell sell sell...

I'd like to come back from Oz to a car waiting. Few quid and a bit of preventative maintenance and it'll be fine. I've had cars sitting for more than 18 months the needed nothing more than fluids and tyres

The car isnt a classic, its a 06 astra gtc.

My mum will turn on the engine every 2 or 3 weeks and take it for a spin around our house. I can leave the windows slightly open to allow air in.
    Would this be enough?

I know i could sell it now and get a newer model when i get back, however I like what i have. Its reliable and hasn't let me down since i bought it. There was only one owner before me that kept it in good condition. I got a new radio for it with the astra radio kit which was fairly pricey. Plus i also bought 4 new bridgestones , new brake pads, aux belt and 2 steering inner tie rods only 2 or 3 months ago so i would like to keep it if i can.

better to know the devil you know that the devil you dont.
