Drakensang Series

I've been meaning to write about this series for a while. I have played the first Drakensang and am part of the way into the follow up River of Time. Interestingly when I first heard of this game the sequel wasn't available on steam in europe (but was in the us) so I bought the complete series on amazon for a nice cheap price.

Drakensang is a real time with pause rpg based on the Dark Eye p&p ruleset (or a subset really). It's essentially the closest thing to a modern Baldurs Gate bar Dragon Age. While you do start out the game choosing a class as you gather experience or adventure points as it's called you can spend them on anything and purchase special skills from trainers. It's a great system with a lot of freedom and as you gather a party (max. 4) you will have good fun customising each to compliment the other.

Lilke Bioware games you will meet several companions and choose up to 3 to bring with every time you go questing. While they are all voiced I can't say the companions are as accomplished as your usual good bioware example but they aren't bad either.

Combat can be very challenging at times and I did find myself leaving an area more than once with plans to return later once a few more skills had been learned. This is the mark of a top rpg for me. I don't ever want to march through without having some challenges along the way.

This is not a "dark and gritty"/"mature" fantasy game. The complete opposite really but I didn't mind that. There are plenty of dark and gritty rpgs out there to fill that need. This is a bright colourful world. Not open world but a series of large areas that can be explored.

While it's not perfect I really enjoyed Drakensang and anyone who likes that style of game will probably enjoy it just as much. I am early in the sequel but almost everything I have read says it's an even better game so if you fancy some rtwp rpg'ing in a charming fantasy world then you can't go wrong.
