New Seiko Orange Monster v Old?

I only have the old OM and BM. Reading the Seiko forums opinion is divided on the relative merits of new v. old. The face is a matter of personal preference with the lume on the new one being slightly whiter than the old, the case is the same, albeit with a different crown, and the bracelet on the old is regarded as slightly better than the new one. The main difference is the movement, with the newer movement being regarded as superior and allowing hacking and handwinding. Whichever one you decide on, your son will be getting a rugged divers watch which will last for years! As far a I'm aware there is no difference between J and K with the designation applying to the market for which the watch was destined.

prefer the newer version dial and the fact it has hacking second hand

ZULUdiver on amazon do a nice PU strap for seikos if you didnt like the bracelet on the new one

Thanks for the advice lads. I`ve plumped for the Mk2, mainly for the better movement. I`m actually surprised there is such little price difference between the two models in fairness.

There's no doubt but that the new one is a better watch than the old - good choice.

What's probably stiffening price on the older one for now is the thought that it is likely to be discontinued and therefore harder to get in the near future. There'll be lots of watchy types snapping them up before that happens, as they are something of a classic within that niche market. And not a bad watch at all either. I had the Orange one on bracelet but ultimately got rid of it as it was just too much for me. Picked up a black one and I used to wear that happily on an olive green maratec on holiday when I didn't want to risk something more expensive.
