Do bike shops do trade ins towards a new bike, I've sold my own Castello to upgrade and I have my wife's Giant avail bike in very good nick, would any bike shop take that as a trade in towards a new bike? Or is that done at all, plus I have no idea what bike to go for! Help...

It's less than common but yeah, some older local bike shops do take trade-ins. One of the Kilkenny natives here might know which ones do/don't.

fitz cycles do but when I last enquired they were offering me pence on what the value of the bike could have fetched selling it myself. Not worth the hassle

I got a decent enough deal for my trade in off my new bike in Harry's in clonskeagh

BTW scheme has had a serious impact on trade-in values. I went to my LBS to trade in my Giant hybrid but as I was only getting €150ish for what cost me €550 6 years ago, I decided to hang on to it for arsing about with the kids, to the shops, etc.

Spokes in Waterford sometimes do trade ins as well. There is a rack of secondhand bikes outside the shop during the day.

Cycle Scene in Cork also do trade in but they might be a bit far for you.

Do you feel you got a fair price re: the new price...?

Could you then haggle on price of bike you purchased.

Far better off selling the bike and using the cash towards a new one, most shops don't accept trade in and those that do will offer a price well below what you could sell it for.

Jez what were you expecting . . .? 150 for 6 year old bike was a very fair offer

In fairness that's seems like a very generous price they gave you, you wouldn't have got a whole lot more selling it privately.

A bike shop will have to factor in the cost of cleaning, servicing and storing any bike they take in as a trade, not to mention that this is likely to cost them the sale of one new bike. They also need to make a profit on them. Logically, they are going to offer you a price that would be lower than the second-hand market value for the bike. The pay off is that it reduces the hassle faced in terms of timing and number of interactions to get your new bike.

I wouldn't do it myself. When passing Harry's recently, I enquired about what they would value my bike at (Paul Milnes Team Cross SL cyclocross bike with 105 and Ultegra Chainset, about 4 years old, Aksium wheelset, frogslegs contilever brakes); they offered €250. I understand where the price came from, but I wouldn't sell it for that knowing (well, believing) I could get almost double that second hand.

Cyclesuperstore in Tallaght also advertise that they do trade ins.
Don't know of anyone who has used it though.

Yeah, with hindsight I'd say you're both right. I was probably expecting too much. I put some stock in the fact that while it's six years old I let it sit in the shed for over 4 years and barely used it although it's been used quite a lot in the last few months. I doubt there's even 1,000 km on it and it still looks like new with not a single scratch but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's still six years old.

In the end it all worked out as my LBS gave me €100 off the retail off my new road bike so it has only cost me €50 to hold on to my pristine hybrid.

I may even post in the 'Fleet' thread now. :D
