Would a hemoglobin test show if you have too much iron?

I can get it done in the chemist but I'm not sure if it would be enough to rule out iron overload?

I went to give a blood donation and the finger prick test showed my Hemoglobin as being to low and my donation was refused . I went to the local Hos for a proper full blood count and they assured my my levels were good and to go ahead with the donation which I did . Not sure which test the Pharmacist and how accurate though .

Go to a doctor and get a proper blood test. Iron overload can be very serious if left untreated.

If they can do a test when you donate blood, the pharmacy will be able to do one.

What makes you think you might have too high an iron level, by the way?

Haemoglobin production is related to iron levels, so it would be an good indication, yes.;)

Serum ferritin and serum transferrin saturation are the tests for Iron overload. Haemoglobin can be normal in hemachromatosis.

    Go to the doctor.

That's true, I tried giving blood about a year ago but they wouldn't take it as my haemoglobin levels were too low. However I went for blood test in my doctors as I was worried that I had anemia and the tests you mention showed my iron was high when the results came back. I had to give another sample to be sent off to the uk and indeed it showed that I do have haemochromatois. Its a genetic test and it showed that I had "Compound heterozygous" haemochromatotis which is a milder form of haemochromatosis. Doctor said I don't really have to worry about it, just not to take iron supplements etc.
