Honda CR-Z, VRT reduction for hybrids?

Can anyone tell me why the Revenue VRT calculator show the VRT due on a 2010 Honda CR-Z at over €2000, can't remember the exact amount. I thought there was a refund/exemption for hybrid vehicles, a Prius has VRT due of only €320.

Are you putting in the bog standard one or a high spec model? I know with the Prius if you choose the T-Spirit with leather option on it the VRT jumps by almost a grand.

There's only 1 listed so had to pick that one.

The reason for this is that the Revenue does not consider a CRZ a hybrid at all. To them for a car to be a 'Hybrid it must be capable of propulsion solely by either its battery or by its petrol engine - which the Prius is. However the CRZ always has to have some - indeed most of its power from the petrol engine and is only boosted by the battery at appropriate times. It is not capable of propulsion using its battery alone.

Here is the exact definition taken from the Revenue site

A hybrid electric vehicle is a vehicle that derives its motor power from a combination of an internal combustion engine and an electric motor and is capable of being driven on electric propulsion alone for a material part of its normal driving cycle. What is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle? A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is a series production vehicle that derives its motive power from a combination of an electric motor and an internal combustion engine, where the electric motor derives its power from a battery that may be charged from the internal combustion engine and an alternating current (AC) electric mains supply and is capable of being driven on electric propulsion alo...... Thanks for that, I did look for the Revenue definition of a hybrid vehicle, but obviously not hard enough! Seems a reasonable stance.

I agree I was almost going to buy one but when I heard it was a hybrid that was not recognised as such by officialdom I baulked. Why take all the risks of having those expensive batteries and get none of the benefits in tax breaks.

Id love one with just a normal petrol or diesel engine. :(

I fail to see what officialdom has to do with it, it only effects the VRT.

As regards IMA, it's a proven technology at this stage, around about 15 years or so. The petrol engine will run without it if it fails, unlike a Prius for example.

What is with the diesel obsession in this country.

I saw one on a Japanese auction site recently with a K20 swap. 220bhp and no batteries!

I believe that Honda Ireland shipped a load of unsold CR-Z's over to the UK, as they couldn't sell them here.

Ironic someone is now looking to import one from the UK.....

Lovely looking car, but with all that weight and only 120bhp it's not the CRX revival it should have been.
