Uncool Facebook dead and buried as teens 'unlike' it in droves, study says

    So, whats next?

Hopefully this is the beginning of the end for (anti) social networks

    http://news.sky.com/story/1187851/facebook-dead-and-buried-as-teens-turn-away

Facebook is "basically dead and buried" with many UK teenagers feeling embarrassed even to be associated with it, new research says.

Young people are apparently turning away from it "in their droves" and are using "cooler" websites and apps such as Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and WhatsApp.

Professor Daniel Miller, from University College London which helped carry out the research, said: "Where once parents worried about their children joining Facebook, the children now say it is their family that insists they stay there to post about their lives.

"Parents have worked out how to use the site and see it as a way for the family to remain connected. In response, the young are moving on to cooler things."

He added: "What appears to be the most seminal moment in a young person’s decision to leave Facebook was surely that dreaded day your mum sends you a friend request.

"You just can't be young and free if you know your parents can access your every indiscretion.

"The desire for the new, also drives each new generation to find their own media and this is playing out now in social media.

"It is nothing new that young people care about style and status in relation to their peers, and Facebook is simply not cool anymore."
Snapchat logo With Snapchat, pictures disappear seconds after you have been sent

The EU-funded research, which questioned 16-18 year olds in the UK, suggested the newer sites and apps were not as good as Facebook in terms of functionality.

Facebook is more integrated, better for photo albums, organising parties and more effective for observing people’s relationships, said the survey.

But WhatsApp is better for messaging and is now said to have overtaken Facebook as the number one way to send mobile messages, it added.

A lot of teenagers have also turned to Snapchat, a picture-sharing service that allows you to send pictures that disappear seconds after they have been sent.

One of the most popular alternatives is Instagram, which allows you to upload and share photos, and which is owned by Facebook.

Mike Butcher, from Techcrunch.com, told Sky News: "Facebook used to be quite a private place, especially among university students.

"And gradually because Facebook needs to make money it had to open up and become more public.

"So that's what happening and they (young people) are going towards new kinds of platforms like Instagram or Twitter."

Facebook won't die off that quick because old people get set in their ways. Anyone over 25 on it now will be there for life or until they grow out of it. Young people won't bother with FB because of all the old wans on it. Sad really.

    What a non story.

There's allegedly around 500 million people on Facebook so even if ALL the kids in the UK stopped using it, I doubt anyone would notice.

Facebook was always gonna go the way of MySpace, Bebo etc. Its still a bit off yet but it'll happen sure enough.

People get bored of things. I only really use the IM feature on it, and even then just because it's cheaper than texting.

I'm in my late teens and I'm sick of Facebook. Great for keeping in contact but I'm absolutely sick of the constant streams of unfiltered shíte posted just for attention. I'm also hate everyone knowing my business and being tagged everywhere.

I got rid of my account a while ago and don't miss it at all, well bar the keeping in contact with some people, but I just learned to text and call everyone I want now. Not a big deal. Twitter is much better I think, don't use it very often but I like how I'm in more control of what gets shared.

Facebook isn't going anywhere just because younger kids are turned off of it. It's the first form of social media that is accessible to everyone of all ages. Loads of people my generation and older use it regularly and it is and will continue to be one of the easiest and integrated methods of keeping in touch and up to date with friends, family and acquaintances all over the world.

The problem that teenagers have with it (parents seeing what their up to and what they say) is the same problem adults who aren't on it have with it. They don't want everyone knowing what they are doing or saying either. People will respond to this with "get over yourself, no-on cares what you're doing" etc., but that still doesn't change the fact that a lot of people still want privacy. When something comes along that is designed with the ability for the user to target their comments better, it will beat facebook. I know that you can control privacy settings on facebook, but who wants to do all that, especially if you want different settings for different people.

They take away a key privacy setting every now and again. The more recent one is that anyone can search for your name and locate your page. That used to be FBs saving grace for me, but now anyone can locate me by searching my name. So far, I still have my page completely locked down, all people can see is one profile picture that they can't click on, one cover photo and my relationship status.
I used to have a setting where only friends could send me private messages, but they took that off us too

You can limit the audience for your statuses on FB, ban certain people from seeing certain ones, or make a group of close friends and make status updates visible to only them...

Not a hope. It's not because Facebook is uncool per say but that it has become inefficient, bloated and it has undesirable users for the demographic it most needs - teenagers.

You don't like Facebook, then don't f**king use it. Very simple.

I do find it ironic that you made that comment about social networking sites even though you seem to be more than happy to use Boards and even add friends on this site.

"Parents have worked out how to use the site and see it as a way for the family to remain connected. In response, the young are moving on to cooler things."
What a shocking revelation. People that are old enough to have teenage children can actually figure out how to use the internet.

Message boards are generally for anonymous discussion. People can come together, completely anonymously regardless of each other being complete strangers and discuss issues relating to topics they enjoy e.g gym goers will congregate in fitness forums, gamers in game forums etc, etc.

Social networks are not anonymous. Quite the opposite. They are there to put forward an impression of you anf your life and to allow you to keep in touch with real life family, friends and aquaintances. On these sites you rarely engage in deep conversation but you share personal aspects like major life events and social gatherings. You putup photos nd write about what is happening to you now.
(Note: Not all social networks try to fit all criteria. Facebook is the best example of trying to be jack of all trades)

I dont subscribe to the idea that social networks are anti social. Nor that these message boards are.

Its an industry trend that the older the age the longer it takes to adapt to new technologies and ideas or services like social networks.

It would be nice if someone invented an app called 'Real World'. An app that would help teens to get da fúck of their holes, go out, interact, create and maintain real world friendships.

Yep. I ,an 18 year old, have lost the ability to make meaningful friends because of facebook.

We do. I can guarantee it.

I dont subscribe to the idea that social networks are anti social. Nor that these message boards are.

neither would i but of the two i think message boards are the more likely to be.
though i think studies showed spending a lot of time on FB brings on depression, symptoms of it, that's irrelevant here though

the OP i think it was that mentioned social networks being anti social first, the post above by Corvus Maximus just now also alludes to the same thoughts about them

people who spend a lot of time on FB are usually chatting to their real life friends on it, etc.
it isn't as if they don't interact with these people in the real world

though on messages boards with the anonymity (minimal), how many of these people are being something they're not? how many boards users interact with each other in the real world - they only do it sat behind a screen - i would say a small percentage, how many of them go to the events, etc. is that not more anti social than talking to real world friends on a social networking site?
