My wife is looking to get a bike for summer spins with the young lad and myself.

Must be able to take a child seat.

She was in Wheelworx yesterday and they suggested the Trek 7.3fx for €689. Any good? Any alternatives?

I got the gents 7.1fx 3 years ago and it is bullet proof, great all round bike but quiet heavy..

Its probably only going to be used for a quick cycles locally when the weather is nice and maybe some odd committing. Nothing major so weight should be too much of an issue

Reliable but heavy alright, cyclesuperstore have a cannondale hybrid/flat bar in stock for slightly less or 699 before the sale , and I must say its about half the weight of the trek, lightest reasonably priced bike I've seen, and in cycling less weight is everything.

It would be perfect, The 7 series really are a great all rounder and very comfortable.

Mostly that is true, but if it's for short social spins etc It shouldn't be an issue.

Then again it pays to check out all the options, but the 7 series trek is built like a tank..

Yeah, but a good light bike may lead to more than short spins, that's the point.

I have one. No trouble with it and I've a fair few km up on it. It is heavy alright. 13.5kg iirc. That could be wrong and I'm not going out to weigh it now!!
I've upgraded to a road bike and notice a huge difference in weight

My wife has a Felt Speed 50. That's a fair bit lighter than the Trek and it came in at around the same money.

I got that 7.3fx three or four years ago in my local bike shop for €620 I think. €699 sounds expensive.

Anyway, good and all as the Trek is I'd go for the Felt Speed 50 if you could get one.
