Hi, I hope its the right section to ask this.
After few years of living here I just noticed that the "full tank lock" isnt working on f. stations which I usually visit. Any particular reason for that? I did ask the guy working on one, but still no answer to be received.
    Thanks

Do you mean the auto cut off on the nozzle or the lock on the grip so you don't have to keep the handle/lever pressed?

Are you talking about the latch on the pump itself that leaves the pump on until the tank is full? I have often wondered that too. Never seen it working in any Irish pumps, would be very handy.

Yeap, the lock on the grip. With my current car it not a big problem, cause now I usually fill for around 20ish€ but if I had a bigger tank which I would like to fill up full, that would be quite handy. I was working on petrol station in Poland, without that I think I would commit seppuku after first day. Just saves You few minutes which You could use for something else, like cleaning the windows/etc. Which is another thing which I miss here. Buckets with water and washer...

    Heath and Safety.

I assume you mean the little clip that you engage to keep the fuel pumping when you are not holding it.

I remember them working in Ireland a few years ago but none do now. Probably someone blew themselves up somehow so we all get punished. Do truck drivers stand there for 10 minutes filling their tanks?

I have never seen a big truck filling up on normal f.station here, but on normal fuel pump it takes quite long time to get it full. As far I remember more than 10 minutes.
Its a shame cause the safety mechanism is still working on the "pistol", but You cant have all I suppose.

Bring a paperclip, works a treat.

Lowest common denominator health and safety, gotta punish the rest of us to cater for the stupid.

The fuel cap in most cars can be used as a replacement.

Brilliant idea that, just get distracted as she is nearly full and she will keep filling anyway :(

When I first noticed I immediately pictured a pair of little scumbags in tracksuits; one walking in to have a chat with the attendant while the other leaving the clip on, flooding the garage with petrol then strolling out and throwing a lit up zippo back over their shoulders..

EDIT: So I guess its just safety reasons

Jamming a coke bottle in will do the job.

    +1 on the tank cap.

It works on quite a few pumps at stations around me. I'd say many of them simply get broken and are never fixed.

1.) Its illegal to have them fitted to pumps.

2.) Not all vehicles cut out automatically when the tank fills, some Saabs particulary are notorious for this.

3.) The main reason they are not on pumps here is because the public forget they have the pumps attached to their car, and go into the shop and pay, come back out, get into their cars and drive away and rip the entire pump out of the ground, cause about 20 grand of damage, cause a huge safety disaster and shut the station down for about 2 days until it can be repaired and approved by the appropriate bodies.

4.) Most newer cars have their fuel caps designed so that they actually fit between the pump handle perfectly thus keeping it pumping when the person lets go (which makes everything above (expect the ripping the pump out of the ground - that still applies) redundant.

Under what statute? I've assumed it's an industry guideline, otherwise no pumps would have them, and there are still a few out there.

They work in my local station. Hence why I fill up there mostly! :D

What? Why would a vehicle cut out when the tank is full??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 811 ✭✭✭yoshiktk

Hard to believe that its illegal. Dunno maybe it was just my luck that during my 3 years working at Shell we never had any accident...
As for number 2, its weird. The only reason for that not working which come to my mind would be a separate pipe in the tank for gas.

Typo, a few vehicles are prone to the fuel pump not cutting out for some reason.

    44. Subject to any conditions attached to a licence, every hose through which petroleum Class I is dispensed by a self-service pump to the fuel tank of a vehicle shall be equipped with a nozzle so designed, constructed or arranged that—

( a ) no stop or catch on the nozzle is capable of keeping the nozzle valve open to permit delivery of petroleum and to eliminate manual control,
( b ) the nozzle valve cannot be kept open to permit delivery of petroleum other than by manual pressure and closes automatically to prevent delivery of petroleum immediately manual pressure is released,
( c ) it is provided with an effective automatic shut-off device to prevent spillage caused by splash-back or obstruction in or overfilling of the fuel tank of a vehicle or container,
( d ) the maximum flow-rate to operate the automatic shut-off device to prevent delivery of petroleum shall not exceed 45 litres per minute,
( e ) after the shut-off device of the nozzle has been activated, it is not possible to re-commence delivery to the fuel tank without first returning the nozzle control lever to the "off" position.
    45. (1) Where the dispensing of petroleum Class I is carried on at a retail store the following provisions shall apply:

Thanks Bandara. Hard to believe it's that old, I definitely used them around half of the time in my first years of driving, and that would've been in the 90s. And as someone else has said, they're still around today.

Doesn't apply to Diesel - only "petroleum".

    Yes it clearly states that.

A lot of the forecourts have disabled the little clip on the filler handle on the diesel pumps. Even when it isn't required by law. I find that annoying as when I fill diesel in my diesel car I fill the tank and it's preferable for me to engage the clip and leave it fill properly.

Then again petrol stations have some pretty dumb and irrelevant rules in place - such as the mobile phones not allowed. I can give a good explanation on this rule, but that would be for another thread.

2 inch of coat hanger wire. Bend a loop at one end, clip it to your keyring - you can't drive off without taking it out.
