    Hi,

Having a weird issue here. I connected my laptop to the home wireless network and now the Internet connection is not working correctly. I restarted the router to enable wireless but when it came back on the dsl light was blinking.

They've never connected a device to wireless before in this house except the guy who set it up tested it.

A ping to Google works fine. The router is netopia.

    Any ideas?

A flashing DSL light means its attempting sync to the local exchange, meaning you shouldn't be able to ping Google at all since it hasn't connected yet. For this to disconnect at point of wireless connection is most likely just conincidence.

Can you tell me where the Netopia is connected in the house? Is it connected through a filter / Z blocker? How many phones connected? Any Sky or monitored house alarms in the house?

Is it working when you connect your laptop to the router directly using an Ethernet cable ? Is the wifi enabled on the laptop , ie is there a switch on the laptop which turns it on & off ?
Can the laptop detect the router ?
Easier to rule out the obvious stuff first then move onto the next stage if none of that works .

No ethernet on desktop not working either. Laptop is connected to router yes. Limited access it says. I ran the ping test from both desktop and laptop

Yes the ping thing is weird. I don't think it is coincidence as something similar happened on Christmas day. Was resolved by powering off router for 20 mins and disabling wireless on router. I was not involved in fixing it then but tried similar steps today with no luck. Phone line has filter. They might have other phone lines in the house, will check.

half the country is having exchange problems... the storms are causing mayhem.. lightning strikes have killed thousands of modems, cabinet equipment, and the winds have knocked many trees over pulling down lines
