Health insurance renewal date

Hi, I have to renew my insurance on the 3rd of January. I'm looking at switching to a new provider with a cheaper plan. If I set the start date of the new policy to the 31st of December I will save a bit more, than if I set the start date to the 3rd of January. I guess this would mean though that I will be covered by two insurers for 3 days. Other than having to renew a bit earlier next year is there anything to stop me doing this? I can't see any reason why I can't be covered by more than one company, or do I need to cancel the other policy before taking out the new one?

    Thanks.
