For the past few months I have been thinking about getting into a martial art and finally decided today that I would just go for it. I have no past experience but do attend a gym. Im 29 so will I find it very hard to get into it and are all classes mixed ages? The reason I am interested in martial arts is half health and fitness and the other half is my love for MMA/UFC. Still trying to decided which martial art to go for so I will do some research on YouTube but I would still like to know what everyone would recommend.
Thanks in advance for any info or advice :)

What part of Dublin are you in?

As far as age and fitness is concerned, I can only talk about my experience in training a bit in BJJ & MMA. In the class I attend, there are younger guys, older guys, guys who look like they've been chiseled out of wood, others who look like they haven't exercised in years, a real mixed bunch. And everyone is treated equally.

You don't need any level of fitness already, get fit by training. It's tough but very fun! :)

FYI, there's a beginners BJJ course starting in Kyuzo in the second week of January. Perfect opportunity to start alongside others in your exact position!

What do you mean by mixed ages? If you're talking about having to train with 18-20 year olds who seem to bounce back from any injury they get, then yeah, that's something you'll have to deal with. If you're talking about training with little kids, then no that's not something you have to put up with and personally I think you should avoid anywhere that has a mix like that.

Yeah was thinking BJJ. Thanks will do a bit more research on it.

Had a look at the video for Kyuzo Gym looks really good. Im living South side in Clondalkin so it would be a 20 minute drive depending on traffic.
Somewhere closer would be handy but if thats one of the best places for BJJ might just go for it.

SBG would probably be closer to you. http://sbgireland.com/

John and Pat Sheridan run this club, John is an Irish Open, London Open and European Champion in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu....both the lads are great guys!

I'd highly recommend you check this club out! :)

    Hi darraghR,

Did you go for your first class? I'm the same as yourself. I'm going to a free trial in a BJJ club and also think I'll have to check out SBG. I haven't quite decided shall I start with BJJ or jump straight into MMA. What's your plan?

No still havnt decided. I have no boxing background or any combat at all :p so think I will go for the BJJ first. Need to decide on a gym now :)

Yea I'm the same. I'm off to my first BJJ class now. SBG have a big open day on the 11th in their new gym.

If you want to do MMA, I think you should just do MMA. There are a lot of classes these days that assume that you are starting form scratch.

If you do find that it's all a bit too much at once, then you always have the option of switching to a grappling or striking class for a while, but at least you will know that you tried.

    Good advice there.

To be honest, I would try both and see what you like.

I done MMA coming from a striking background (Bushide, Kempo, Boxing & Muay Thai) and loved it but I got hooked on the grappling and switched to BJJ - this surprised me as I was always a stand up striking fan but I just got absorbed in the cerebral side of BJJ.

One thing is for sure, if you start either it will be the best decision you make.
