"You know you'd often wonder, as the years go past
.Why did you ever bother going to mass
.Was it the fear of god or to find a wife
.Or just buying shares in the afterlife".

It would be really imo, especially if it's just to please your parents, partner or other family. if you don't believe or get anything out of it then don't go.

Where do you live? I'm not offering a lift, just want to rob all your presents while everyone's at mass.

I won't, but a lot of people do it for this reason.

Yourself, why would a person betray their set views by attending a religious service? Once you denounce your inherited faith stick with the decision and never regress to appease family members.

There's no inbetween. You either subscibe to the faith or don't, there's no shame in either choice.

Jesus, if we all adopted that attitude then the churches would be empty.

Nope. Why bother? Pointless exercise if you ain't a practicing Catholic. Unless this is the good ol days and you want to show off the 2013 SUV and the new clothes to the neighbours.

I swear it was the most cringeworthy thing seeing people dressed up like dolls for a mass. Really shows how cultral a lot of the "Catholics" here are.

I don't think the nature of human interactions is that black and white. Precisely because I don't believe, the service is meaningless and if I'm asked to go it's essentially asking me, "come sit down in one place and be quiet while a guy talks up the front to everyone". That's literally the sum total of the meaning it has to me. Sure, I might not really want to sit down in one place and be quiet for that amount of time, but it's hardly the most onerous thing I'll ever be asked to do.
That said, I usually have better things to do, but for example I attend my fathers remembrance mass with my mother every year. The comfort it gives her far outweighs the boredom I feel for the hour or so, and besides, I'm an adult. I can more than keep myself entertained in my own head for an hour. Human relations are definitionally a series of compromises.

Not going would cause more grief than just going and thinking of {anything else} to pass the time.

When not going caused grief, many years ago, I made it my Christmas purpose to cause grief.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

    :D
Remember, folks, a dogma is for life, not just for Christmas.

If it keeps the peace, I'd go. But I wouldn't pray!

Father Dougal McGuire: God, Ted, I've heard about those cults. Everyone dressing in black and saying our Lord's going to come back and judge us all.

Father Ted Crilly: No... no, Dougal, that's us. That's Catholicism you're talking about there.

A lot of them would be the once a year crowd. 'Hello Jesus how are you? See you again same time next year'.

You could barely fit in the back hall of the church last night absolutely packed to the rafters!

Went to the 8.30 mass this morning. Thought it would be very quiet. Was wrong. Standing room only.

So was the one near ours reportedly. Call me a cynic but I think it has more to do with three townland churches closing and tge congregations having to attend the nearest town instead.
