Appreciate any thoughts on this present-related question: is Shimano SPD SL a good enough system for high end racing?

Aren't they used through out the peleton?

They are widely used. I prefer Speedplays since the cleats dont wear down anywhere near as fast and are double sided. More expensive to buy though.

Is the power being put through something that's a major factor in pedal choice? I.e. can they handle the kind of power generated in track sprints (individual pursuit, etc)?

Good enough for Sky, Argos-Shimano, Garmin, BMC, and Orica Greenedge for sure...

Are they all shimano supplied teams? Or would group set deals be separate to shoe/pedal deals?

Strictly speaking they're separate, since Speedplay and Look also make an appearance in the pro circuit. But yeah they're all Shimano teams, generally Shimano will sponsor a team for groupset, wheels and components all at once.
