The IIHS small overlap test was introduced in 2012, it is a severe test and one that many cars, even new designs (eg BMW F30) have done badly in. Several Toyota/Lexus models have done badly. However both the Volvo S60 and XC60 did well and received the highest rating of "good". I posted about it here

Recently the XC90 and S80 have also been tested and they too have received a good rating. I think this is significant and impressive given that both cars pre date the introduction of the tests by several years. This probably shows that Volvo has been designing its cars to cope well with "non standard" impacts. It would be interesting to see how the Ford models built on the same platforms as these cars would do.

The XC90 is particular has been around long time, ~11 years. Both XC90 and S80 are due for replacement in the next couple of years and no doubt the replacements will be even safer.

    XC90

For comparison this Toyota Rav4 model was introduced in 2013 and got the worst "poor" rating
