I priced 2 cars about 4 months on the VRT website, put in the correct details etc but when I checked again today hoping maybe the price would have dropped a few pound I was gobsmacked, both cars up in vrt price, one is up €188 while the other is up €297, both are 1.4 diesels...
What is going on here.....seems they can change it when they wish....very unfair

VRT was never introduced or designed to be fair. If a particular car gets a lot of hits on the VRT calculator site then they have been known to rise the OMSP. They also know that a lot of people try and hold out until January in the thinking that VRT will be cheaper.

I though it was pretty much known that VRT is "I charge the **** I want and there is feck all you can do, to make it better, your tears are sooooo YUMMY!!! *rub their nipples "

Pretty much remove cabble company and insert "VRT"

The VRT is what is on the online Calculator, it changes sometimes as others have said but the guys in the Center just use the calculator figures.

And considering how erm, "handy" that is, why wouldn't they? "handy" as in "a big, big ride".

Was it Budget 2013 or Budget 2014 that introduced the A1-B2 bands?

No its a tiny increase. When I was importing the 850CSi the VRT was going up and down by upto 6 grand per swing. Stop complaining.

Thinly veiled "they screwed me much harder than they will screw you" post. :D

When he brought it in it would have been cheaper that a lot more standard cars.

I'd clear my cookies if I was the op.

The VRT calculator is only an indication of what the VRT could be on a particular date, it is not a written in stone quote and does fluctuate randomly. It is silly not to allow for some sort of deviation on the total cost of landing the car over here. If an extra €200 is a deal breaker then you really have to ask is the car affordable to you.

I bought a car in the UK in Oct 2012. Just re-checked the VRT as if I bought it now (1 year later) - it has gone up €200 also.

Yes its all relative, people who can afford to pay the money where importing from the uk makes sense are relatively ok for money. Its either still a good deal after vrt (buy it) or its not (dont buy it). Boo frickity hoo like...

    Quick question.

I'm looking to buy a 2008 car that was first registered in the UK on Jan. 21st 2008. I know the VRT will be co2 based. But will the road tax be CC or co2 based?

I seem to remember from Jan to July, you were able to choose which system you went on, but from July it was 100% co2 based.

Edit: Found out. It'll be based on the lesser of the two, so in my case, the co2 rate.

All imports with an original registration of 2008 or later go on the new tax system. The dual system only applied to cars originally registered in Ireland between Jan 1st and June 30th 2008.
