Want to drop out of college, but worried about fees?

Hello I have been wanted to drop out of college and maybe start again on a different course next September, but people have said to me that you have to pay extra fees if you start a different course in a different college, like extra fees could be 6000euros when original price is only around 2500euros, and I want to know if that is true or not?

It just that it kinda makes no sense to me that you have to pay extra fees to that extent for starting a different course in a different college, I keep thinking that maybe they are thinking of repeat fees when you have to repeat the first year maybe? Information about this is difficult to find, so apologies for sounding ignorant about all this.

Also I came across a thread on here about a similar problem and they were asking if it was true that if you dropped out before the end of January, you can get half your fees back?

I really need help with this because I am miserable where I am, the course is not for me but family are against me dropping about because of fees.
    Please help me out here.

Why does it make no sense? You're not entitled to start course after course for free. You get each year of a degree for free so if you repeat a year of your course you pay for it or if you drop out and start another course you pay fees for the equivalent years repeated. If it wasn't this way students would spend their whole time swapping courses because it didn't cost them anything.

You will need to contact the college and find out the repercussions of leaving now and what it will cost you next year. If you choose to leave you should try and find a job for the next 9 months so you can save money towards fees. There's also no point in staying in a course because of the cost of changing to another course if you hate the course you are currently on.

Someone with a similar problem to you. Seems that if you do not start the second semester you would only be eligible for fees for the first half of the college year next year.

Wait, I never said that I expected to start another course for free! It just I paid 2000 for this year, and it will be the same for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year if I keep going with this course, I'll have to pay fees for every year for my course, so as far as I know I am getting nothing free here in this college.
So I just thought that if you dropped out and started again a different course in a different college, you just pay the normal fees, which is why I don't really understand why fees go up for people who start again to 5000 or 6000, even if you moved to a different college and course.

The two grand is a registration fee, not a course fee. The course fees are waived for four years because the government cover one year of first year, one year of second year, and so on.

So, if you drop out, you have to pay course fees on top of the registration fee if you want to start another course. Or half fees if you drop out by a certain time, not sure what time.

Or if you wait five years before going on to a new course, you only pay the registration fees

Ah, I see. Yeah I was googling about this free tuition fee as i thought the 2000 went towards that as well as student services. Now that makes more sense.

What year are you in OP? If you're in 1st year you will only have to pay full fees for the 1st year of your new course.

I dropped out of college twice and I don't regret it one little bit. It cost me (and the parents!) a small fortune but I am now in the final year of a course I love, and have already got a distinction in my ordinary degree. If you really don't like your course now, you probably won't suddenly start enjoying it in the future. My advice would be to drop out now, cut your losses and start doing some research into different degrees that interest you before the CAO window shuts. Get yourself a job to save up the money, or get a loan if you need to.

Universities (Trinity, UCD, any NUI, DCU etc...) tend to be far more expensive the institutes of technology (DIT, ITT etc.) for many courses so bear that in mind.

I worked a hell of a lot harder when I was paying a fair whack for it though, I'll tell you that much! But I also had infinitely more fun!

Talk to the college about it. Because you are dropping out early you might only have to pay a portion of the tuition fees next year.

Yep first year, which is why I wanna drop out now, be better to go now rather than pack it in 3rd year. That happened to two people I knew, and they had to basically start their college education all over again.:eek:

I am not entirely sure but I think that if you drop out before the end of January that you are entitled to do first year again for 'free' fees.....contact the college and find out, either way you may only owe 50% of the fees and if you stopped now you might be able to get a job and save up the required shortfall !!
