    Hi folks,

Incredibly cold kitchen extension on our new house. Serious draft coming through ceiling when I removed a panel so we thought that getting the extension roof relined with insulation would do the trick.

    To our disappointment, no.

Still a serious draft and temp difference.

Just pulled the bottom off the kitchen presses to find this. The entire bottom of the wall is open with a bloody gale coming through.

Pics attached - the bottom of the wall has totally been hacked away for pipes.

Questions - is this a concern beyond insulation?

Secondly, how do I sort this out in the short term? The longer term solution is having the kitchen done.

But can I safely put attic insulation in there to seal it?

    Thanks,
    Quad

I dont think its a concern beyond the draught coming in .
If you could get in there with a can of spray foam it would be better than attic insulation at sealing it up , but attic insulation will help if you pack as much as you can in there .
Is there pipes coming out through the wall on the outside ? You could put a bit of mortar around the pipes there too to stop it coming in

I think, after taking a good look, it's the dry lining they've mangled.

So I decided to go the expanding foam route to seal the holes.

Only to discover that the only way I can get the can into the space (sideways) means nothing comes out of the can. It needs to be vertical.

So short of ripping the cupboards out, I'm not sure what to do!!

As a temporary stop gap ( literal and as figure of speech ) buy a pvc covered fibreglass hot water tank lagging jacket. They come in segments. Split the segments up and stuff them in there suasage roll fashion. See how that €30/40 pans out.

You can extend the pipe using another piece of tube but be careful as it is a sticky dirty mess if it gets somewhere it is not meant to be.

Can you recommend who did this for you? I know you are NCD based also, so would be appreciated.
